A new term at Chapman University starts the same way for all students – with a trip to the Chapman University Bookstore for textbooks!  But this fall, students will find the first big change in college bookstore layouts since the advent of self-service shopping decades ago – Shop-By-Author.

Shop-By-Author simplifies the customer experience and makes it easier to locate the money-saving Rental, Digital and Used books Chapman University Bookstore is known for.

It works like this: Instead of searching the bookstore shelves for each course, students just go to blackboard.chapman.edu on their phones and click “Follett Discover.” This will produce a list of all the course materials they need, arranged alphabetically by author.  With this list in hand, the student just makes one pass through the Chapman Bookstore textbook department and collects what they need in the order of the list.

Why is this so great?  When the same book is being used in more than one course or section, the bookstore must divide the copies of that book into several different stacks throughout the textbook department. This forces the store to divide the cheaper used books they have in stock across all courses.  As students buy, this can make it look like the store is out of used copies, or worse, completely out of stock of a title, driving students to look elsewhere for the book they need. Shop-By-Author eliminates this roadblock for students, and ensures that if students are looking for used copies, they will find every copy the store could source in one place.

“Our Shop-By-Author program is one of several ways we’re innovating the bookstore customer experience and driving affordable access to course materials,” said Brian Lacey, Chapman University Bookstore manager.  “On top of our growing textbook rental library and inventory of used books, Shop-By-Author offers another way we are trying to make it easier for students at Chapman.”

Chapman University Bookstore is ready to help Chapman University students get the materials they need at prices they can afford.  For more information on Shop-By-Author or the various ways to save on course materials, simply drop by the Chapman University Bookstore or go to chapmanstore.com.
