{"id":1433,"date":"2023-06-09T11:05:37","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T18:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/pharmacy\/2023\/06\/09\/2-2m-r01-grant-is-awarded-to-dr-ren-ostrom\/"},"modified":"2023-06-09T11:05:37","modified_gmt":"2023-06-09T18:05:37","slug":"2-2m-r01-grant-is-awarded-to-dr-ren-ostrom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/pharmacy\/2023\/06\/09\/2-2m-r01-grant-is-awarded-to-dr-ren-ostrom\/","title":{"rendered":"$2.2M R01 Grant is Awarded to Dr. Ren Ostrom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor and Interim Dean Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/rennolds-ostrom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ren Ostrom<\/a> and his collaborators have been awarded over $2.2 million for an NIH R01 grant by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Heart Lung and Blood Institute<\/a> for critical basic science research into developing new drugs for people with asthma.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2023\/06\/ren-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1435 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2023\/06\/ren-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The project, \u201cCompartmentalized signaling and crosstalk in airway myocytes,\u201d will investigate the mechanisms inside airway smooth muscle (ASM) cells that cause specific hormones, neurotransmitters, and drugs signal within sub-cellular compartments that optimize their effects on cell function. The three primary aims will use imaging techniques to understand the spatial characteristics of signaling by G protein-coupled receptors, examine how these receptors generate unique patterns of signals, and establish the relationship between spatial and temporal regulation of contractile proteins by cAMP and calcium signals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very excited to push the boundaries of our understanding of how signals are spatially organized in tiny compartments inside cells and how these can be leveraged to develop new therapies for asthma,&#8221; Dr. Ostrom says. &#8220;My collaborators, Dr. Tom Rich of the University of South Alabama and Dr. Raymond Penn of Thomas Jefferson University, bring complementary knowledge and expertise to this project that will allow us to make significant breakthroughs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2023\/06\/Ostrom-Ren.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1437\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1437 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2023\/06\/Ostrom-Ren.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2023\/06\/Ostrom-Ren.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2023\/06\/Ostrom-Ren-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ultimate goal is to enhance the understanding of compartmentalized signaling about how receptors employ specific signaling mechanisms to produce efficient and targeted functional effects of hormones and medications.
