{"id":10138,"date":"2025-04-22T08:27:51","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T15:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2025\/04\/22\/april-research-highlights-2\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T23:23:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T23:23:44","slug":"april-research-highlights-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2025\/04\/22\/april-research-highlights-2\/","title":{"rendered":"April Research Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schmid College of Science and Technology\u2019s doctoral program in Computational and Data Science (CADS) has landed once again on TechGuide\u2019s list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techguide.org\/analytics\/phd-in-data-science\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">best data science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Ph.D. programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Christine O\u2019Connell, assistant professor of biological sciences, has won a National Science Foundation RAPID grant to <\/span><b>study heavy metals in urban soils following the recent fires in Los Angeles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. NSF RAPID research grants are awarded when data must be accessed or acquired rapidly, including during fast-changing conditions after natural or anthropogenic disasters. O\u2019Connell and Christopher Kim, professor of chemistry, are already <\/span><b>surveying heavy metal concentrations in surface and near surface soils around the Eaton Fire<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Clark is a doctoral student in STEM education research at University of Georgia. Janda and Grimes are both doctoral students in Chemistry at UCLA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Polona Durcik, assistant professor of mathematics, working in collaboration with former Grand Challenges Initiative postdoctoral teaching and research fellow Mario Stip\u010di\u0107, published a study entitled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11856-024-2710-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quantitative bounds for products of simplices in subsets of the unit cube<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Israeli Journal of Mathematics. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Durcik studies <\/span><b>harmonic analysis and its connections with ergodic theory and arithmetic combinatorics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Micah Kim \u201926, an undergraduate student studying Environmental Science &amp; Policy, took the time to show off a day in her life going to class, conducting independent research, participating in the honors program, working on campus, and even getting the essentials at Trader Joes.
