Huntington Award for Outstanding Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10176\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2025\/05\/IMG_9730-e1748978132856.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"383\" \/>Sophie Alter, a senior biochemistry and molecular biology major,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has been named the recipient of the Ronald M. Huntington Award for Outstanding Scholarship for 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ronald M. Huntington Award is bestowed upon the graduating senior judged to have exhibited the<\/span><b> most distinguished record of scholarly accomplishments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">while a student at Chapman University. Evidence of exemplary and meritorious scholarship well beyond normal classroom activities is expected. A nomination from a Chapman faculty member is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alter completed substantial research during her four years at Chapman. Among her research experiences, she is most proud of her senior capstone. Under the guidance of Associate Professor John Miklavcic, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alter worked on a Phase I clinical trial for pediatric inflammatory bowel disease. The study \u2014\u00a0a collaboration with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/choc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Children\u2019s Hospital of Orange County<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014\u00a0assessed the safety and efficacy of a dietary treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was enveloped and challenged to analyze and connect patterns in medical data, while being pushed to expand my own understanding of what healthcare means and what it can do,\u201d said Alter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The summer after her first year at Chapman, Alter completed a <\/span><b>research internship at Stanford University School of Medicine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, in an NIH-funded hepatology and gastroenterology lab. \u201cBeing part of an active medicinal lab as an undergraduate student was invaluable,\u201d said Alter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following summer, Alter worked as a<\/span><b> youth program leader with the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, where she taught incoming first-graders from East Palo Alto. She covered a wide curriculum, spanning mathematics, reading, and science. \u201c<\/span><b>This experience not only deepened my understanding of the power of scholarship but the impact of sharing it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d said Alter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, Alter spent time in Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala as part of a surgical team. \u201cI was in the operating room for hours a day, assisting surgeons and learning everything I could absorb,\u201d said Alter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outside of the lab, Alter served on the Schmid Student Leadership Council and participated in the American Medical Student Association.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alter will pursue an MS in Public Health this fall. \u201cThrough these varied experiences, I have come to appreciate that scholarship is not only about the acquisition of information, <\/span><b>but also sharing and applying that knowledge in ways that contribute to humanity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sophie Alter, a senior biochemistry and molecular biology major, has been named the recipient of the Ronald M.
