{"id":10216,"date":"2025-07-02T10:45:41","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T17:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2025\/07\/02\/may-research-highlights-2\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T10:45:41","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T17:45:41","slug":"may-research-highlights-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2025\/07\/02\/may-research-highlights-2\/","title":{"rendered":"June Research Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schmid College of Science and Technology continues to produce <\/span><b>world-class research on the environment. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A new publication in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2024EF005447?af=R\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earth\u2019s Future<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">from senior research associate Wenzhao Li, including faculty members Thomas Piechota, Joshua Fisher and Hesham El-Askary, considers the significant changes in the weather conditions of the western U.S., marked by increased variability and rapid<\/span><b> &#8220;whiplash&#8221; shifts between extreme drought and flood conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The new publication joins a slate of other recent studies including one on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/add177\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">effects of increasing CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on plant growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and on the susceptibility and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19475705.2024.2449134\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">risk of outbursts in glacial lakes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ten percent of the global population lives in areas susceptible to volcanic hazards. Since volcanic eruptions cannot be prevented, detecting early signs of volcanic activity is crucial for public safety. Associate professor of Environmental Sciences and Policy, Joshua Fisher, and faculty from the Biological Sciences Program and the Grand Challenges Initiative, are part of a group collecting leaf samples from trees and measuring carbon dioxide levels near an active volcano in Costa Rica. \u201cOur research is a two-way interdisciplinary intersection between ecology and volcanology,\u201d Fisher said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nasa.gov%2Fearth%2Fnatural-disasters%2Fvolcanoes%2Fnasa-satellites-provide-early-volcano-warnings%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckgilbertson%40chapman.edu%7Cae68e154326b44bf7a3b08ddad076b11%7C809929af2d2545bf9837089eb9cfbd01%7C0%7C0%7C638856969542598867%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=V3jvPtHAxYbzN47EsXb4raEMpuI0zRWIP7uGAEMrUJY%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NASA writeup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cWe\u2019re interested not only in tree responses to volcanic carbon dioxide as an early warning of eruption, but also in how much the trees are able to take up, as a window into the future of the Earth when all of Earth\u2019s trees are exposed to high levels of carbon dioxide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anemia affects more than 2 billion people worldwide, including an estimated 83 million Americans who are at high risk. Andrew Lyon, professor of chemistry, is co-author of a new study in the prestigious journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.2424677122?af=R\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that describes <\/span><b>using a photo of a fingernail, a mobile app, and a little bit of machine learning to detect anemia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The app brings reliable screening directly into the hands of consumers, enabling real-time health monitoring and earlier intervention, empowering users to make informed decisions without waiting for lab results. While not intended for self-diagnosis, the app does help users understand when to consult a healthcare provider. Lyon serves as the Chief Scientific Officer of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sanguina.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sanguina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the company that has launched the new product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Office hours:\u00a0they\u2019re a basic part of the student-faculty dynamic, but how helpful are they, really? \u201cOur surveys indicate that 90 percent of students who attended left feeling <\/span><b>more confident about their abilities to succeed in STEM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Students cited not only increased knowledge of course concepts but also how they felt more <\/span><b>supported and connected to the instructor and classmates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d writes Associate Professor of Biological Sciences <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/jeremy-hsu.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeremy Hsu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in a new op-ed published in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/opinion\/views\/2025\/05\/13\/office-hours-old-tool-new-challenges-opinion\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inside Higher Ed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Hsu considers the evolution of his own thinking on office hours, the latest research on the topic, and provides best practices for instructors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the end of the academic year come student and faculty awards. Schmid College students and faculty have been recognized with many accolades this month. <\/span><b>Chemistry student Jamie Chin \u201925 has won this year\u2019s Cheverton Award. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Cheverton Award is the oldest and highest undergraduate student honor at Chapman University. Students are not nominated for the Cheverton Award; they are invited to apply by the faculty based on their outstanding academic record and then voted upon by the full faculty. While at Chapman University, Chin carried out research in the lab of Associate Professor of Chemistry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/jerry-larue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jerry LaRue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including a summer spent in Stockholm conducting research with funding from the National Science Foundation. She was also the President of Chapman\u2019s student chapter of the American Chemical Society, a member of the Schmid Student Leadership Council, and a member of the Chapman Women&#8217;s Water Polo Team. <\/span><b>Chin will begin a Ph.D. in inorganic and materials chemistry this fall at University of Texas Austin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Huntington Award for Outstanding Scholarship<\/span><b>. Alter conducted clinical research at Children\u2019s Hospital of Orange County, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">volunteered at a hospital in Guatemala, and interned at Stanford Medicine. She was a member of the Schmid College Student Leadership Council, a Residential Life Orientation Leader, and a member of the American Medical Student Association. She speaks about her Chapman experience in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/dku-VQDbhXs?si=wcn8KoIYq8_aTzYd&amp;t=1361\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">her recent graduation
