(Photo Courtesy of TRACE)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Several Schmid faculty are tackling urgent environmental challenges with both local and global impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/christine-oconnell.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Christine O\u2019Connell<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is\u00a0investigating how ecosystem warming and shifting precipitation patterns influence tropical soil greenhouse gas emissions, to deepen our understanding of climate feedback loops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/rosalee-hellberg.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Rosalee Hellberg<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is developing\u00a0improved detection methods for\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Salmonella enterica<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in meat analog products, strengthening food safety in a rapidly expanding sector of the food industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/joshua-fisher.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Joshua Fisher<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is leading\u00a0an\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/opportunities\/fire-fire-science-innovations-through-research-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NSF\u00a0FIRE-NET<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0project\u00a0in collaboration with the Orange County Fire Authority. The project focuses on building an integrated data and decision-support system to improve wildfire response. By advancing information architecture and user-centered system design, the initiative aims to reduce response times and enhance safety for more than two million residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reimagining Catalysis for a Sustainable Future<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In chemistry,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/jerry-larue.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Jerry LaRue<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is leading research on ultrafast dynamics in core-shell nanoparticle photocatalysts, an ambitious project aimed at designing next-generation catalytic materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Catalysts are essential to modern life, enabling the production of fuels, the synthesis of fertilizers, the manufacture of plastics, and the control of pollution. Yet many\u00a0remain\u00a0inefficient or costly. By engineering plasmonic nanoparticles with carefully designed transition-metal shells and probing their bond-breaking and bond-forming dynamics with advanced spectroscopic tools, Dr. LaRue\u2019s work aims to\u00a0understand and\u00a0improve catalytic performance. The implications span clean energy production, green chemistry, and environmental protection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Expanding Access to Research in STEM<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Creating opportunities is as important as discovery itself.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/christopher-kim.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Chris Kim<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has secured continued support for the\u00a0<\/span><strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/undergraduate\/surfees-program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Earth and Environmental Sciences (SURFEES)<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, an REU Site program that has served more than 100 students since 2014.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/_files\/mastheads\/surfees-masthead.jpg\" alt=\"people in lab coats studying objects\" width=\"780\" height=\"260\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students researching in labs as part of the SURFEEs program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SURFEES\u00a0provides\u00a0hands-on, faculty-mentored research experiences for community college students, particularly those from historically underrepresented and low-income backgrounds. Through laboratory research, fieldwork, professional development workshops, and cohort programming, the program strengthens pathways into STEM degrees and careers, expanding\u00a0the range of\u00a0students who participate\u00a0in scientific discovery. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Advancing Biomedical Innovation<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Schmid&#8217;s research is also driving innovation in human health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/john-miklavcic.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. John Miklavcic<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is examining how extracellular vesicles mediate inflammation in intestinal cells, offering insight into the etiology of inflammatory bowel disease and novel therapeutics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/_faculty-profile.aspx?email=arha@chapman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Allisandra Rha<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is advancing genome-editing approaches for GM1 gangliosidosis, a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Her work builds on CRISPR-based base editing strategies designed to restore enzyme function in patient-derived neural models, which is a step toward more precise, potentially transformative therapeutics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/jeremy-hsu.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Jeremy Hsu<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is\u00a0contributing\u00a0to STEM education reform by studying the impact of single-session, research-focused courses in introductory biology and developing evidence-based strategies to improve student confidence and persistence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Learning from Nature\u2019s Most Remarkable Materials<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/douglas-fudge.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Douglas Fudge\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0research\u00a0on the integrative biology of fiber-reinforced slime in hagfish explores one of nature\u2019s most extraordinary biological materials. Another investigates the\u00a0formation\u00a0pathways and spectral signatures of interstellar dust grains, fundamental building blocks in the formation of planets and rocky bodies throughout the universe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From molecules to ecosystems to galaxies, Schmid College faculty continue to demonstrate the power of interdisciplinary research grounded in rigor, creativity, and real-world impact.
