Technical. Stressful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s not typically known for inspiring performance art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But for Kurt Horney \u201924, two semesters of organic chemistry sparked a creative idea: what would these lectures look like in the form of dance?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Horney is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/copa\/dance\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/undergraduate\/bs-biochemistry.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biochemistry and Molecular Biology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> double major from Acton, California. For his senior choreography project, Horney sought to combine these two interests. The dance, entitled \u201c<\/span><b>Lesson 3 | Constitutional Isomers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d is based on a video lecture of the same name. In it, Assistant Professor of Chemistry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/maduka-ogba\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maduka Ogba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> writes many diagrams on the blackboard, including skeletal formulas and Lewis structures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To create his choreography, Horney visualized these diagrams in the form of movement. \u201cSome of the choreography is interpretations of these diagrams, and<\/span><b> having the dancers be very interconnected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The piece was performed at the annual Frameworks Dance Concert, held March 28 and 29 in Memorial Hall\u2019s Chapman Auditorium. Nine dancers wore<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all-black costumes with brightly colored socks, mimicking the way molecules are depicted on PyMOL, a molecular visualization software Horney used in class.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9683\" style=\"width: 8000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9683 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2024\/05\/dance-photos.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"8000\" height=\"4000\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nine dancers wore all-black costumes with brightly colored socks, mimicking the way molecules are depicted on molecular visualization software PyMOL.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI always get the same question when I tell people I\u2019m majoring in dance and biochemistry. It\u2019s always \u2014\u00a0<\/span><b>what do those majors have in common<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSo this piece was my way of bridging that gap, and having an answer to that question. <\/span><b>I can bring my two passions together to create something new<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9680\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9680\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9680\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2024\/05\/kurt-maduka.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kurt Horney \u201924 and Assistant Professor Maduka Ogba at the Frameworks Dance Concert.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Horney had both semesters of organic chemistry with Ogba, and has been working in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/madukaogba.com\/team\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ogba\u2019s research lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for two years, studying computational chemistry reaction mechanisms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was excited to see this performance come to fruition,\u201d said Ogba. \u201cI had no idea what to expect and wondered how Kurt would pull it off!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ogba himself has a background in dance, having been the captain of a hip-hop dance crew in college. \u201cI go to Dr. Ogba for everything \u2014\u00a0to cry in his office, or ask him life advice,\u201d said Horney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Horney originally came to Chapman as a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major. He\u2019d grown up dancing, but when COVID-19 shut down his dance company in his senior year of high school, he stopped. \u201cI didn\u2019t even know if I would continue dancing after that,\u201d said Horney.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then in his sophomore year at Chapman, Horney heard about the Chapman Dance Alliance \u2014\u00a0a student organization whose dance classes are open to all. \u201cI thought, okay, I\u2019ll pop in and see what it\u2019s all about,\u201d he said. \u201c<\/span><b>And then I fell right back in love with dance.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Horney decided to add the Dance minor in the fall of his junior year. That spring, he realized that he could complete the major. \u201cI came into the department chair\u2019s office and presented this whole spreadsheet showing her I could finish the dance major in time\u2026 And then I kind of just dove headfirst into it!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI never expected to be this interdisciplinary,\u201d continued Horney. \u201cI just planned to do my biochem thing and be on my way! <\/span><b>I\u2019d had this plan since junior year of high school that I wanted to be a pharmaceutical researcher<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. And I continued that all the way through \u2014 then dance threw me for a loop!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat\u2019s what life tends to do,\u201d he laughed. \u201cBut I\u2019m not such a structured, planned person now. And I\u2019ve really enjoyed the <\/span><b>balance of going from lecture class to dance class<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cKurt&#8217;s academic journey at Chapman showcases the significance of a liberal arts education,\u201d noted Ogba. \u201cHe has pursued various intellectual and artistic interests that may seem unrelated, but has <\/span><b>leveraged these experiences to shape his aspirations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. I am proud of him and was amazed by his skills as a dancer and choreographer at the recital.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After graduation, Horney is headed to New York to pursue professional dance opportunities. The evening of the Frameworks concert, Rowland-Goldsmith hosted the entire class for dinner, and they then walked to campus to see the performance. \u201cNearly every student came over,\u201d said Rowland-Goldsmith. \u201cOur class ended at 5 p.m., so I decided to make a night of us getting together to support Kurt.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><br style=\"font-weight: 400\" \/><br
