{"id":2423,"date":"2013-08-07T12:20:36","date_gmt":"2013-08-07T19:20:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2013\/08\/07\/professor-singh-himalayan-glacers\/"},"modified":"2013-08-07T12:20:36","modified_gmt":"2013-08-07T19:20:36","slug":"professor-singh-himalayan-glacers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2013\/08\/07\/professor-singh-himalayan-glacers\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Singh&#039;s Findings on Himalayan Glaciers Featured in Times of India"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Is dust pollution speeding up melting of Himalayan glaciers?<\/h3>\n<p>Professor Ramesh Singh, was recently interviewed for an article that ran in the <a title=\"The Times of India\" href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/international-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Times of India<\/a> on August 5, 2013.\u00a0 During his time as a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, Singh participated in extensive satellite data collection and analysis for the Himalayan region.\u00a0 It is during this period when Singh noticed unusually high levels of atmospheric pollution in the region.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The dust which is very common in the western parts of India almost every year (during April-June) reaches to the western parts of the Himalayas,&#8221; Singh said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to the dust pollution, black carbon from forest fires in the region has been known to contribute to the warming of the troposphere and the Himalayan glaciers.\u00a0 The International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) hopes to find out the impact of both dust and black carbon on the Himalayan glaciers and snow.\u00a0 The IACS has asked for Professor Singh&#8217;s assistance in setting up a working study group for this issue as well as a detailed proposal on what the study group&#8217;s objectives will be.<\/p>\n<p>Read the <a title=\"Is dust pollution speeding up melting of Himalayan glaciers?\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/2013-08-05\/global-warming\/41091976_1_himalayan-glaciers-black-carbon-dust-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">original article<\/a> at the Times of India website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is dust pollution speeding up melting of Himalayan glaciers?
