You are invited to attend a CEESMO science lecture by Visiting Professor Dr. Katsumi Hattori and graduate student, Ms. Rika Tsutsumi, of the Graduate School of Science at Chiba University, Japan.

\nProfessor Hattori is an expert in geophysics, signal processing, and natural hazard applications.  Ms. Rika Tsutsumi studies volcanic and lava activity using MODIS data processing.
\n
\nThere have been many reports on ultra-low-frequency (ULF) electromagnetic phenomena associated with earthquakes in a very wide frequency range. We are presenting a case study of unusual behaviors of geomagnetic diurnal variations prior to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake off the Pacific Coast (Mw9.0). In order to verify and clarify the ULF seismo-magnetic phenomena, a statistical investigation of the relation between magnetic anomalies and local seismicity have been performed based on geomagnetic data observed during 2001-2010 at the Kakioka Station in Japan.

\nThe lecture, hosted by the Center of Excellence in Earth Systems Modeling and Observations (
\nCEESMO<\/a>
\n), is scheduled to take place at 10am in Smith Hall room 101A.
