The exact amount of the gift is confidential, but it is in excess of $10 million.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3104\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3104\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2013\/12\/emmigift.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3104\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3104\" alt=\"Catherine and James Emmi, pictured here with President Jim Doti\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2013\/12\/emmigift.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catherine and James Emmi, pictured here with President Jim Doti at the annual Christmas at the Ritz event, have given a major gift in support of the sciences at Chapman University.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The donation was announced by Chapman University <strong>President James L. Doti. Ph.D.<\/strong> at the university\u2019s annual \u201c<a title=\"Christmas at the Ritz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/support-chapman\/get-involved\/women-of-chapman\/christmas-ritz.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Christmas at the Ritz<\/a>\u201d event presented on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Ritz Restaurant in Newport Beach by the <a title=\"Women of Chapman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/support-chapman\/get-involved\/women-of-chapman\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Women of Chapman<\/a> support group, of which Catherine Emmi is a member.<\/p>\n<p>President Doti expressed the university\u2019s gratitude: \u201cI can\u2019t think of two people who are more committed to science and education, in all the varied facets of those fields.\u00a0 Jim Emmi\u2019s passion for science and technology, and for engineering, in particular, inspired him to make this gift that will have an impact on so many students.\u00a0 Catherine is an educator through and through, and she understands the vital importance of the sciences in today\u2019s higher education.\u00a0 Together, their vision and generosity will leave a lasting legacy that will benefit so many people \u2013 including the citizens of Orange County and the world who will gain from the knowledge and discoveries made by our researchers, students and alumni.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This gift follows in the steps of other major announcements from Chapman in the past year dedicated to the university\u2019s unprecedented growth in the sciences.\u00a0\u00a0 The university\u2019s commitment to constructing a new, $130 million <a title=\"Center for Science and Technology\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/support-schmid\/science-center.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Science and Technology<\/a> on the Chapman campus in Orange, to replace the 1960s-era Hashinger Science Center, was announced in 2012, and a fund-raising campaign has been launched.\u00a0 Also in 2012, the university purchased two large research-and-development buildings in the Irvine Spectrum area to launch its <a title=\"Rinker Graduate Health Sciences Campus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/support-schmid\/health-science-campus.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">health science campus<\/a>, which in November 2013 was <a title=\"Schmid College Blog: Rinker Gift\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2013\/11\/04\/rinker-gift-names-health-science-campus\/\">named<\/a> the Harry and Diane Rinker Health Science Campus thanks to a $15 million gift from the Rinkers. Chapman has also recently announced the development of a new <a title=\"School of Pharmacy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/pharmacy\/\" target=\"_blank\">School of Pharmacy<\/a> and a new <a title=\"MMS Physician Assistant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/crean-school-health\/academic-programs\/physician-assistant\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">physician\u2019s assistant program<\/a> \u2013 both of which are slated to begin admitting students in fall 2014 and which will be housed on the Rinker campus,\u00a0 as will Chapman\u2019s existing <a title=\"Physical Therapy Doctoral program\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/crean-school-health\/physical-therapy\/doctor-physical-therapy.aspx\">physical therapy doctoral program<\/a> \u2013 one of the oldest in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all, with the addition of the Rinker Health Science Campus in Irvine and the new Center for Science and Technology on our Orange campus, we will have added more than 440,000 square feet of new science facilities, quadrupling our present space and investing more than $200 million in the sciences,\u201d said <strong>Daniele Struppa, Ph.D.<\/strong>, chancellor of Chapman University.\u00a0 \u201cThat gives some sense of how seriously we are taking these steps, and how crucial we believe science is for Chapman and for the careers of our current and future students.\u00a0 Thanks to this visionary gift from the Emmis, we will be able to move forward with confidence as we continue our fund-raising and planning for the future of the sciences at Chapman University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emmi is the retired president of Kimberly Development Company, and a longtime manager of apartment properties in Orange County. He is a member of the Chapman University Board of Trustees. He has served on the Pacific Symphony Board of Trustees since 1990 in various capacities, including as vice president of development and as president. An avid sailor, he has participated in many yacht races over the years. He is a member and has served as a commodore of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Balboa. He is also a member and has served as treasurer of the Balboa Yacht Club.<\/p>\n<p>A teacher all her life, <strong>Catherine Emmi<\/strong> is passionate about education and the pursuit of lifelong learning. Catherine earned her B.A. and B.Ed. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and her M.Ed. from Pepperdine University. Catherine supports Chapman University as a member of the Women of Chapman. She serves as a member of the ARCS Foundation Board of Trustees, a member of the Pacific Symphony Support League and a member of the Sound of Music chapter of the Guilds of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
