One day, the story goes, Albert Einstein was playing a string duet with his friend Fritz Kreisler, the famous Viennese violinist.\u00a0 Einstein went off the melody at one point. \u201cYou know, Albert,\u201d said Kreisler, \u201cyour trouble is that you can\u2019t count.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a funny story that brings up a little-known fact:\u00a0Einstein<\/a>\u00a0(1879-1955), the great physicist who changed our view of the universe with his revolutionary theories, was in his spare time an eager amateur violinist and chamber music fan.\u00a0 Now there\u2019s a chance to explore the fascinating links between music and physics as exemplified by Einstein, as award-winning British violinist\u00a0Jack Liebeck\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Brian Foster<\/a>, Oxford professor of physics and himself an amateur violinist, bring their internationally acclaimed \u201cEinstein\u2019s Universe\u201d series of three lecture-performances to Chapman University, Feb. 28 through March 3.\u00a0 All are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

Liebeck, named\u00a0Young British Classical Performer of 2010<\/a>, and Foster first conceived of\u201cEinstein\u2019s Universe\u201d<\/a>\u00a0as a part of the International Year of Physics in 2005, also known as \u201cEinstein Year\u201d in celebration of Einstein\u2019s lasting influence on our world.\u00a0 Since then, they have won rave reviews around the globe for their compelling lecture-performances, which spotlight the intersection of Einstein\u2019s science and his love of music.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cA program such as \u2018Einstein\u2019s Universe\u2019 provides a reaffirmation that the concerns of physical sciences and the humanities are much the same,\u201d said Patrick Quinn, Ph.D., dean of Chapman\u2019s Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences.\u00a0\u201cThe pathway to knowledge is intertwined with an appreciation of both approaches.\u00a0 We very much look forward to these illuminating events and hope the public will join us for these unique programs.\u201d<\/p>\n
