{"id":3779,"date":"2014-04-28T10:00:10","date_gmt":"2014-04-28T17:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2014\/04\/28\/student-wins-top-honor-for-analysis-of-health-data-research-in-india\/"},"modified":"2014-04-28T10:00:10","modified_gmt":"2014-04-28T17:00:10","slug":"student-wins-top-honor-for-analysis-of-health-data-research-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2014\/04\/28\/student-wins-top-honor-for-analysis-of-health-data-research-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Student wins top honor for analysis of health data research in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em><strong>This\u00a0story\u00a0originally appeared on\u00a0Chapman&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/happenings\/2014\/04\/24\/student-wins-top-honor-for-analysis-of-health-data-research-in-india\/\">Happenings blog<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>Read\u00a0it in full <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/happenings\/2014\/04\/24\/student-wins-top-honor-for-analysis-of-health-data-research-in-india\/\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A sophomore in the Chapman University Honors Program has won a top award for research examining the environmental and socioeconomic factors in rural India that contribute to life-threatening intestinal disease in children under five.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sohini Mukherjee \u201916<\/strong>, a double major in English and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/crean-school-health\/academic-programs\/ba-psychology\/index.aspx\">psychology<\/a>, won first place for her project, titled\u00a0<em>Study of Socioeconomic, Sanitation and Hygiene Factors as Determinants of Recurrent Diarrhea in Children Aged Five and Under<\/em>, at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msudenver.edu\/honors\/wrhc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Regional Honors Conference<\/a> held in Denver, Colo., this month.<\/p>\n<p>Mukherjee traveled to India to work with researchers at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dngmresfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">DNGM Research Foundation<\/a> to help evaluate data they collected in a rural village located in the region of West Bengal.<\/p>\n<p>A delegation of 16 honors students attended the April 11-13 conference, accompanied by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/julye-bidmead\">Julye Bidmead, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor in the Department of Religious Studies and the University Honors Program, and Sue Johnson, the program\u2019s coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>Other presentations\u00a0by Schmid College students\u00a0included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biological science major <strong>Timothy Lee \u201914<\/strong> and history major Abby Kim \u201915,\u00a0<em>Societal Self Image In South Korean Media and Societal Health<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Biological science major <strong>Timothy Lee \u201914<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>Analysis of Moral Dilemmas in Vocational Choice<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Environmental science major <strong>Danielle Platt \u201917<\/strong> presented two papers,\u00a0<em>Sustainable Solutions and their Potential Economic Growth<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Investments in Agricultural Education and its Implications in Poverty Reductions in the Developing World<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Computer science and creative writing major <strong>Joseph Dye \u201915<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>Transhumanism: Why the Negativity?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Business administration major\u00a0<strong>Cristiana Wilcoxon \u201914<\/strong>, <strong>Joseph Dye \u201915<\/strong> and biological science major <strong>Seth Yund \u201915<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>Restructuring Sapere Aude<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This\u00a0story\u00a0originally appeared on\u00a0Chapman&#8217;s\u00a0Happenings blog.\u00a0Read\u00a0it in full here.
