{"id":4062,"date":"2014-12-03T08:00:44","date_gmt":"2014-12-03T16:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2014\/12\/03\/puzzled-scientists\/"},"modified":"2014-12-03T08:00:44","modified_gmt":"2014-12-03T16:00:44","slug":"puzzled-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2014\/12\/03\/puzzled-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"What happens when scientists are puzzled?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2014\/12\/Steinberg-web.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3058\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3058\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2014\/12\/Steinberg-web.jpg\" alt=\"3052-revision-v1\" width=\"159\" height=\"174\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/quantum-studies\/index.aspx\">The Institute for Quantum Studies<\/a><br \/>\n presents a lecture titled, God&#8217;s Dice: Quantum Mechanics from Einstein to the internet to the pernicious Influence of the future of the past, with<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.physics.utoronto.ca\/~aephraim\/\">Aephraim Steinberg<\/a><br \/>\n from the University of Toronto, on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 5:30 &#8211; 6:30 p.m. in the Fish Interfaith Chapel.&#xD;<br \/>\n&#xD;<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the event:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#xD;<br \/>\n&#xD;<br \/>\nWhile quantum mechanics is immensely powerful and seems to underpin the description of everything in the world, its insistence on only predicting what happens when we make measurements has left scientist and philosophers alike puzzled: Einstein even said, &#8220;Is the moon there when nobody looks?&#8221;&#xD;<br \/>\n&#xD;<br \/>\nThroughout the 20th Century, quantum measurement confused and intrigued physics&#8217;s. At the dawn of the 21st Century, these issues have taken on a new practical importance due to the birth of the interdisciplinary science of quantum information with game-changing applications.&#xA0;Dr. Steinberg&#8217;s lab experiments with control of ultra-cold atoms and entangled photons. Dr. Steinberg will talk about some of the new ideas revolutionizing the view of quantum measurement, in particular the surprising advantages of measuring &#8220;weakly&#8221; as first suggested by the co-director of the<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/quantum-studies\/index.aspx\">Institute for Quantum Studies,<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/yakir-aharonov\"> Dr. Yakir Aharonov<\/a><br \/>\n, professor of physics in the Schmid College of Science and Technology. Dr. Steinberg will review new ways to think about things ranging from Einstein&#8217;s moon to Cheshire cats.&#xD;<br \/>\n&#xD;<br \/>\nThis event is free and open to the public.
