From Crisis to Sustainability: The Challenge of the 21st Century<\/h3>\n


\nJoin us this week for our Science Forum Series.  This week we will be featuring Richard A. Matthew, Professor at the Schools of Social Ecology and Social Science and Director of the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs at the University of California, Irvine.
\n
\nThroughout the world, communities are experiencing
\nthe twin pressures of institutional failure and
\nenvironmental stress. Many trends suggest that
\nthese interactive pressures will intensify in the years
\nahead, resulting in public health setbacks, population
\ndisplacement and violence on unprecedented scales.
\nInformed by many years of fi eldwork in sub-Saharan
\nAfrica and South Asia, this talk reviews the forces
\ncontributing to crisis and looks at the prospects for
\ntransformation toward more sustainable, economically
\nrobust, fair and ecologically-sound practices.
