{"id":520,"date":"2012-10-09T08:55:24","date_gmt":"2012-10-09T15:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2012\/10\/09\/panel-to-explore-the-pros-and-cons-of-prop-37-genetically-modified-food\/"},"modified":"2012-10-09T08:55:24","modified_gmt":"2012-10-09T15:55:24","slug":"panel-to-explore-the-pros-and-cons-of-prop-37-genetically-modified-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2012\/10\/09\/panel-to-explore-the-pros-and-cons-of-prop-37-genetically-modified-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Panel to Explore the Pros and Cons of Prop 37, Genetically Modified Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pros and cons of Proposition 37, a state ballot initiative that would require some genetically modified foods to be labeled as such, will be the topic of a panel discussion from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in Beckman Hall room 404 at Chapman University.<\/p>\n<p>Among the participants for \u201cThe Prop. 37-GMO Labeling Debate\u201d will be representatives from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carighttoknow.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">California Right to Know<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noprop37.com\/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=search&amp;utm_campaign=nosearch\" target=\"_blank\">No on Prop 37 Campaign<\/a> and the principal attorney for The Food Lawyers, a law firm that specializes in food industry issues. Moderating the discussion will be Alan McHughen, Ph.D., a public sector educator, scientist and consumer advocate. McHughen worked at Yale University and the University of Saskatchewan before joining the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucr.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of California, Riverside<\/a>. He served on recent U.S. National Academy of Sciences panels investigating the environmental effects of transgenic plants, and a second investigating the health effects of genetically modified foods.<\/p>\n<p>California voters are likely to see an uptick in political advertising for and against the initiative in the coming weeks before the Nov. 6 election. Interest in the initiative is also growing in other parts of the nation, where <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sacbee.com\/capitolalertlatest\/2012\/10\/proposition-37-poll-finds-strong-support-for-labeling-genetically-engineered-food.html\" target=\"_blank\">pollsters<\/a> are studying voter opinion on Prop. 37.<\/p>\n<p>The event is sponsored by the Chapman University Food Science Club.
