{"id":5293,"date":"2015-04-29T16:00:05","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T23:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2015\/04\/29\/medtronic-internships\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T23:23:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T23:23:26","slug":"medtronic-internships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2015\/04\/29\/medtronic-internships\/","title":{"rendered":"Schmid College Students Intern at Medtronic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With internships becoming increasingly vital to future careers, it\u2019s no surprise that Schmid College students are taking full advantage of internship opportunities in their fields of study.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jacquelynsmith\/2012\/12\/06\/internships-may-be-the-easiest-way-to-a-job-in-2013\/\">According to Forbes.com<\/a>, 69% of large companies offer full-time jobs to their interns\u2014that&#8217;s a statistic that is hard for students nearing graduation to overlook.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4387\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4387\" style=\"width: 174px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4387\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2015\/04\/Gabby1.jpg\" alt=\"dale_etal_gca_15\" width=\"174\" height=\"232\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Gabrielle Stetz during a shift at her Medtronic internship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of those students is\u00a0<b>Gabrielle Stetz<\/b>, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/undergraduate\/bs-biochemistry.aspx\">biochemistry and molecular biology<\/a>\u00a0major at Schmid College who graduates this year. Stetz interns at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medtronic.com\/us-en\/index.html\">Medtronic<\/a>, a biomedical device company located in Santa Ana, CA. She works with various advanced technologies, including Energy-dispersive Xray\u00a0Spectroscopy (EDX) and Scanning Electron Micoscopy (SEM). These machines allow\u00a0for extreme close-up viewing of biomaterials and makes it possible to tell the elemental\u00a0composition of any material, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Stetz says,\u00a0\u201cMy favorite part has probably been the people that I\u2019ve been working with. They are all very intelligent and supportive and I\u2019ve had some great mentorship,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4386\" style=\"width: 186px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4386\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2015\/04\/Jonathan3.jpg\" alt=\"4349-revision-v1\" width=\"186\" height=\"248\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Jonathan Woo during a shift at his Medtronic internship<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another Schmid College biochemistry major has also had a meaningful experience interning at Medtronic. For<br \/>\n<b>Jonathan Woo<\/b>, who graduates in December, his involvement with Medtronic goes deeper than academic and professional benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father passed away from a sudden heart attack in high school, so working here has been especially meaningful to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Coronary &amp; Structural Heart branch, Woo prepares samples for microscopic viewing, performs tissue histology, designs models in 3D rendering software and much more.\u00a0His\u00a0primary goal is to characterize animal tissue used for bio-prosthetic heart valve implants\u00a0through various biochemical and mechanical assays.<\/p>\n<p>Woo says, \u201cI have had an incredible internship experience here, learning many facets of industry and science that would not be possible at Chapman alone.
