{"id":5845,"date":"2015-11-13T07:00:56","date_gmt":"2015-11-13T15:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2015\/11\/13\/science-blender-interdisciplinary-breakthrough-at-stonehenge\/"},"modified":"2015-11-13T07:00:56","modified_gmt":"2015-11-13T15:00:56","slug":"science-blender-interdisciplinary-breakthrough-at-stonehenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2015\/11\/13\/science-blender-interdisciplinary-breakthrough-at-stonehenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Science Blender &#124; Interdisciplinary Breakthrough at Stonehenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>Throughout the year, we will be publishing essays from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/about\/message-from-dean.aspx\">Professor Andrew Lyon<\/a>\u2018s\u00a0Honors 389\u00a0course\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0Science Blender\u201d . <em>For the second\u00a0paper this term, students were asked to investigate an &#8220;interdisciplinary breakthrough&#8221;.\u00a0 Below is one student&#8217;s essay\u00a0on the topic.<\/em><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For four years, the <a href=\"http:\/\/lbi-archpro.org\/cs\/stonehenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project<\/a> has been underway, surveying the area, over four square miles, surrounding Stonehenge. Stonehenge is a \u201cprehistoric stone circle monument, cemetery, and archaeological site located on Salisbury Plain, about 8 miles north of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England,\u201d according to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Stonehenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Encyclopedia Britannica<\/a>,,<\/em> and it was built between 3000 and 1520 BCE. The significance of Stonehenge is unknown, but there are many hypotheses surrounding its meaning\u2014 a temple, an instrument to predict solar and lunar eclipses, a monument for the dead or a place of healing, among other theories.<\/p>\n<p>The Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project is a collaboration among the University of Birmingham, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology, Vienna and its international partners, the University of Bradford, the University of St. Andrews and the \u2018ORBit\u2019 Research Group of the Department of Soil Management at the University of Ghent, Belgium (University of Birmingham).\u00a0Vincent Gaffney is the project initiator, national project leader and an archaeologist and expert on the Stonehenge landscape. The team, however, is comprised of many people from many different disciplines:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>archaeologists, photographers, an expert in system design and hardware, a remote sensing and airborne laser scanning expert, computer science engineers, experienced archaeological prospectors, a geometer, remote sensing experts, historians, an interactive animation and 3D visualization expert, an administration and accounting specialist, physicists, a 3D laser scanning expert, a software engineer, a bio-engineer, a soil and earth scientist, a proximal soil sensing expert, a geoarchaeologist and geophysicists. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0project would not be a success without <em>each<\/em> of the specialists.<\/p>\n<p>The team used ground-penetrating radar, high resolution magnetometers and other remote-sensing equipment to map the area surrounding Stonehenge down to a depth of about ten feet. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/what-lies-beneath-Stonehenge-180952437\/?no-ist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Smithsonian<\/em> <\/a>reported that they found buried evidence of over fifteen late Neolithic monuments including henges, barrows, segmented ditches, and pits. \u201cNobody had any idea this was here,\u201d says Gaffney, the project initiator. \u201cInstead of a monument in isolation, we find that Stonehenge was part of a rich<br \/>\nmonumental landscape,\u201d according to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2014\/09\/140911-stonehenge-map-underground-monument-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Geographic<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The groundbreaking discoveries were made possible only by the latest technology. Roff Smith <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2014\/09\/140911-stonehenge-map-underground-monument-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a>, \u201cHigh-tech remote sensing and underground mapping is changing not only what is known about Stonehenge, but also the way archaeology is done.&#8221; This discovery and the new technology are the product of successful collaboration. This is a case of people from many different disciplines working together to accomplish something no one person or discipline could have done on its own.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>About Honors 389: The Science Blender<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout Professor Lyon\u2019s Science Blender course,\u00a0students identify knowledge gaps that\u00a0prevent simple solutions to grand challenges, and then they develop strategies to address those\u00a0gaps.
