{"id":6403,"date":"2016-07-11T10:52:16","date_gmt":"2016-07-11T17:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2016\/07\/11\/chapman-students-discover-something-hot\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T23:23:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T23:23:29","slug":"chapman-students-discover-something-hot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2016\/07\/11\/chapman-students-discover-something-hot\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapman Students Discover Something Hot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--?xml version=\"1.0\" standalone=\"yes\"?--><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A Chapman University team is a finalist in the U.S. Department of Energy, Center for Advanced Energy Studies, and Idaho National Laboratory\u2019s Geothermal Design Challenge!<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7157\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7157\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7157 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2016\/07\/unnamed.jpg\" alt=\"unnamed-5\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Team Orange Magma members, Lotus Thai and Kyvan Elep<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Team Orange Magma consists of two students \u2013 Kyvan Elep \u201917 and Lotus Thai \u201917. Kyvan is an Environmental Science &amp; Policy major with a minor in Secondary Education and Business. Lotus is a Business Administration and Environmental Science &amp; Policy double major with a minor in Political Science. Together, we have designed an <a href=\"https:\/\/caesenergy.org\/geothermaldesign\/orange-magma\/\">infographic<\/a> to illustrate the benefits of geothermal energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The competition, which started out with 109 teams, has been narrowed down to 11 finalists competing for a cash prize and trip to Washington D.C.. For the final week of the competition, we have been tasked to promote our infographic and its message through different social media platforms. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs ES&amp;P majors, we are educated on the technical and complicated aspects of renewable energy. That\u2019s the easy part. The hard part is communicating what we learn in a palatable way for the community to understand,\u201d Lotus said when asked how this competition is different that others.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our infographic illustrates geothermal energy\u2019s large potential in the United States and how it can redefine our future energy portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7162\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7162\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2016\/07\/Geothermal_Round32_Final4-1.jpg\" alt=\"geothermal_round32_final4\" width=\"200\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Team Orange Magma&#8217;s Infographic Submission<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNot only does our infographic tell the story about geothermal technology, it ends with a comparison of renewable energies. We wanted to include this part because we believe it will take a combined effort of resources to shift away from fossil fuels,\u201d stated Kyvan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being able to participate in this competition has given us the opportunity to apply our majors in unique and newly emerging ways using research techniques, graphic designing, and marketing campaigns.
