{"id":7341,"date":"2017-07-28T12:00:48","date_gmt":"2017-07-28T19:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2017\/07\/28\/summer-research-vidal-arroyo-studies-pediatric-cancer-epidemiology-at-baylor-college-of-medicine\/"},"modified":"2017-07-28T12:00:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-28T19:00:48","slug":"summer-research-vidal-arroyo-studies-pediatric-cancer-epidemiology-at-baylor-college-of-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2017\/07\/28\/summer-research-vidal-arroyo-studies-pediatric-cancer-epidemiology-at-baylor-college-of-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Research: Vidal Arroyo Studies Pediatric Cancer Epidemiology at Baylor College of Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Summer research projects aren\u2019t uncommon for students in Chapman University\u2019s Schmid College of Science and Technology, but being accepted into every REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program that you apply to is. <strong>Vidal Arroyo<\/strong>, a third year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/undergraduate\/bs-biochemistry.aspx\">biochemistry and molecular biology major<\/a>, can proudly say that he did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> After applying to over 30 programs and being accepted to every one, Vidal decided to spend his summer as a part of Baylor\u2019s SMART (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/education\/schools\/graduate-school-of-biomedical-sciences\/diversity\/smart\/\">Summer Medical and Research Program Training<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0because he is able to \u201cvolunteer and shadow in a top academic hospital amidst [his] research commitments\u201d and he was excited to work in pediatric cancer epidemiology. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7349\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7349\" style=\"width: 421px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7349\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/07\/vidal-baylor-smart-skyscraper.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;This is a picture of the research building I work at: The Allkek Building for Biomedical Research. It\u2019s currently the newest building in the Texas Medical Center! &#8212; Vidal Arroyo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He is currently working on two projects to gain more insight into factors that affect cancer survival rates. Vidal splits his time (1) working to identify a pattern of single-nucleotide polymorphism loci in childhood leukemia cancer survivors to see if there is correlation between obesity and cancer survival and (2) finding \u201cdifferences in treatment and survival outcomes between adolescents\/young adults (AYA) and adults older than 40\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vidal has been enjoying his time so far, and has been especially interested in the coding that he has been doing. Also a computational science minor, Vidal loves working on codes as part of his research, because the coding he creates \u201cis used to discover new things\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As an undergraduate at Chapman, Vidal knows that what he has learned so far at the school has helped him prepare for what\u2019s ahead. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt in my mind that I wouldn\u2019t be at Baylor if it wasn\u2019t for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/melissa-rowland-goldsmith\">Dr. Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith<\/a>. She first encouraged me to think about these programs when I was in her BIOL-208 (Introduction to Molecular Genetics Cell Biology) class, and she has been an incredible mentor since then. Also, the rigor of her BIOL-208 course has prepared me to think on my feet, which is oftentimes required in a scientific environment.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Through these experiences, Vidal has felt more than ready for his internship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Baylor SMART program has helped open Vidal\u2019s eyes up to the opportunities that he can pursue after graduating. When asked what he has learned so far through the internship, Vidal responded, \u201cWhen I came to Baylor, I was on the fence of whether I wanted to pursue an MD\/PhD or just a straight MD degree. MD\/PhD programs are designed to produce physician-scientists, who are researchers that spend some time in the clinic treating patients. My time here made me realize that I love doing research and I want to spend most of time doing it.\u201d Vidal plans on pursuing his MD\/PhD degree in the future, but will take a gap year to two to keep exploring research opportunities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When he\u2019s not busy researching, Vidal likes to spend his time working as a Chemistry Supplemental Instructor (SI). He has spent a year as a general chemistry SI, and plans on being a organic chemistry SI next year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His advice to anyone thinking about applying to an internship is to \u201cstart early&#8230;apply abroad&#8230; [and] to take the time\u201d to find and apply to programs.
