On August 4th, 2021, Schmid College of Science and Technology hosted the first annual Summer Research Showcase to celebrate the undergraduate students who participated in summer research programs such as SURF, SURFEES, and Schmid College Summer Interns. This was the biggest summer research cohort Schmid College has ever had. The student participants presented their research to over 100 faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The showcase began with our Keck Center Laboratories tours, where Schmid faculty and students showed guests where the research happens. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ranney Food Processing Laboratory<\/strong>
\nDr. Anuradha Prakash<\/a>
\n<\/span>Exploring the effects of processing variables on food quality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kim Environmental Geochemistry (KEG) Laboratory<\/strong>
\n<\/span>Dr. Christopher Kim<\/a>
\nMetal contamination in abandoned mines and metal adsorption\/retention to iron nanoparticles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Structural Biology Laboratory<\/strong>
\nDr. Cedric Owens<\/a>
\nDetermining the structure and function of proteins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Food Protection Laboratory<\/strong>
\nDr. Rosalee Hellberg<\/a>
\nResearching the detection of food fraud and foodborne pathogens using molecular methods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cancer Research Laboratory<\/strong>
\nDr. Marco Bisoffi<\/a> and Dr. Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith<\/a>
\nResearching studies in molecular tumorigenesis and experimental therapeutics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Comparative Biomaterials Laboratory<\/strong>

\nResearching the biomechanics of marine animals with a focus on hagfishes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

LaRue CatLab<\/strong>

\nStudying molecular interactions during chemical encounters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Organic Catalysis Laboratory<\/strong>
\nDr. Allegra Liberman-Martin<\/a>
\nResearching the use of air-sensitive compounds as catalysts for synthesis of organic chemicals and plastics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the Keck Laboratory Tours, a lunch was provided to all attendees while Dr. Christopher Kim gave his opening remarks and introduction to the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, the Student Flash Talks began as students gave a two-minute pitch of their research to the audience. <\/span><\/p>\n
