{"id":9427,"date":"2022-10-31T08:32:58","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T15:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2022\/10\/31\/student-recap-of-the-nsf-ires-experience\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T23:23:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T23:23:42","slug":"student-recap-of-the-nsf-ires-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2022\/10\/31\/student-recap-of-the-nsf-ires-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Recap of the NSF IRES Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past summer, biological sciences and chemistry double major Morgan Grimes &#8217;22 traveled to Stockholm, Sweden for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/undergraduate\/nsf-ires\/index.aspx\">National Science Foundation International Research Experiences for Students (NSF IRES)<\/a> under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Jerry LaRue.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">NSF IRES: Chapman\u2013Stockholm International Research Experience in Heterogeneous Catalysis<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">\u00a0is a 10-week summer research experience in Stockholm, Sweden.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">\u00a0Each student<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">\u00a0scholar selected<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">\u00a0worked with one of four PIs on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">r<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">esearch focused on green catalytic tar reforming in biomass gasification<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">, with experiments ranging<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">\u00a0from model-systems to the real-world catalytic reactors<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227126436 BCX4\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Grimes reflected on her experience, &#8220;I think my favorite parts of the trip were learning about an incredible field of chemistry, physical chemistry and surface science, as well as being able to explore a beautiful country. I had the opportunity to not only spend time gaining experience in a field of science new to me, but I also had ample time to travel the country and see some incredible sites. I was able to learn about a new culture and country and meet some incredible people along the way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jerry LaRue will be taking another cohort to Sweden this coming summer 2023.
