{"id":9575,"date":"2023-12-07T15:58:43","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T23:58:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2023\/12\/07\/december-research-highlights\/"},"modified":"2023-12-07T15:58:43","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T23:58:43","slug":"december-research-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2023\/12\/07\/december-research-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"December Research Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recent grants, presentations and publications by faculty in the Schmid College of Science and Technology showcase the breadth of research activity across the college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A new training grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture secured by faculty Rosalee Hellberg, Anuradha Prakash and Lilian Senger will provide<\/span><b> more than $250,000 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to support <strong>developing future leaders in food sciences<\/strong>. The grant will help train master\u2019s program students in leadership, project management and technical writing, while also offering research, internship and shadowing experiences with industry professionals. Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/graduate\/ms-food-science\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Food Science program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, one of the few in southern California, is emerging as a leader in progressive approaches to education that will <\/span><b>meet the nation\u2019s increasing demand for food scientists. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This grant comes on the heels of Prakash and Senger&#8217;s recent publication with education researcher Assistant Professor Jeremy Hsu, which explores <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/1750-3841.16835\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pathways to food science careers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The college is well-represented at the annual meeting of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agu.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Geophysical Union<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which is gathering this month in San Francisco. Nearly thirty<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chapman faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students and undergraduates will present <\/span><b>more than three dozen projects.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Among the highlights:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grand Challenges Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow Ariane Jong-Levinger will present on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm23\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/1430194\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how to personalize climate impacts to<\/span><b> improve scientific literacy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the undergraduate level<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Computational Analysis and Data Sciences graduate student Rejoice Thomas will present on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm23\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/1422691\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">methods for providing a <\/span><b>holistic outlook for groundwater<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in California<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Environmental Science and Policy undergraduate Jocelyn Valdivia will present on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm23\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/1421117\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tracking the fate of fermentable substrates in <\/span><b>peatland soils<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lastly, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2023\/10\/25\/just-seeing-a-sick-person-can-trigger-your-immune-system-chapman-professor-finds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recent article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OC Register<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> explores research on sickness behavior by Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Patricia Lopes. Current work from Lopes and her research group, funded by a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation, explores the idea that observing another sick animal may trigger an immune response in the healthy animal, <\/span><b>even in the absence of direct exposure to the pathogen itself<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
