{"id":9592,"date":"2024-01-23T09:57:24","date_gmt":"2024-01-23T17:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/scst\/2024\/01\/23\/january-research-highlights\/"},"modified":"2024-01-23T09:57:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-23T17:57:24","slug":"january-research-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2024\/01\/23\/january-research-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"January Research Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scientists and engineers from Schmid College of Science and Technology and the Fowler School of Engineering were on the move once again in January, presenting research at the annual meeting of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sicb.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (SICB) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/saberbio.wildapricot.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (SABER West).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>At SABER West, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">seven members of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.chapman.edu\/hsu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeremy Hsu\u2019s<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">research group <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/2024\/01\/22\/biology-education-research-group-presents-research-at-8th-annual-saber-conference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">presented on topics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ranging from STEM students\u2019 experiences with racism to student motivation to study in introductory biology courses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the same time, members of the research groups led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/waldroplab.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lindsay Waldrop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patriciaclopes.com\/people.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Patricia Lopes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/engineering\/about\/faculty\/cassandra-donatelli.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cassandra Donatelli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> presented at SICB. Among the highlights were presentations by postdoctoral scholar Nicholas Hebdon and alumnus Daniel Mejia \u201922, who are studying <\/span><b>scent detection in domestic dogs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in collaboration with Waldrop with funding from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nre.navy.mil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Office of Naval Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9593\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9593\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9593\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2024\/01\/FoodFraud.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2024\/01\/FoodFraud.jpg 308w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/scst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2024\/01\/FoodFraud-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hellberg edited a book on food fraud in 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Second, a <a href=\"https:\/\/analyticalsciencejournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/pca.3320\">new study<\/a> from Chapman University food science students advances DNA barcoding methodology for <b>identifying what plant species are contained within a given supplement.<\/b> While herbal supplements are regulated in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), prior approval is not needed before going to market and<b> there have been many reports of adulteration and mislabeling of the contents of herbal supplements.<\/b> This study was led by Calin Harris in collaboration with Diane Kim, Chevon Jordan, Miranda Miranda and Associate Professor of Food Science <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/rosalee-hellberg\">Rosalee Hellberg<\/a>. Harris and co-authors<b> tested 54 herbal supplements marketed for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19<\/b>, with a focus on plants such as Ashwagandha, Cinnamon, Ginger, Guduchi, Turmeric and Vacha. For every single species they tested, the study found at least one product with <b>undeclared plant species. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, research from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/about\/our-home\/keck-center\/gci\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grand Challenges Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> postdoctoral fellow Indrajit Sen provides<\/span><b> new ways of thinking about quantum gravity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Published this month in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-50814-w#article-info\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scientific Reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Sen explores how pilot-wave theory, an offbeat formulation of quantum mechanics, <\/span><b>can be used to extract well-defined probabilities from non-normalizable states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, thus addressing a long-standing problem in quantum gravity. Sen\u2019s work has several spin-off implications besides quantum gravity. It implies, for example, that <\/span><b>energy is not a fundamentally discrete physical quantity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, challenging our current understanding of quantum theory. Accordingly, it is possible that tiny perturbations in the early universe gave rise to this discreteness, which can be observed today such as in atomic energy levels.
