And what is the purpose of studying it alongside the sciences? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These were the questions at the heart of a recent conference held at Schmid College. From January 30 to February 2, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/conferences-and-events\/conferences\/philosophy-science-conference.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is Philosophy Useful for the Sciences, And\/Or Vice Versa?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d brought together philosophers and scientists alike to discuss the applicability of philosophy to scientific fields.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The conference was convened in celebration of the first year of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2023\/12\/19\/chapman-offers-unique-doctor-of-science-in-math-philosophy-and-physics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Math, Philosophy and Physics (MPP) doctoral program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, led by program director and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2024\/01\/31\/chairs-math-philosophy-and-physics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kennedy Chair in Philosophy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Marco Panza. Nearly ten distinct disciplines were represented, from statistics to microbiology to (naturally) philosophy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe importance of philosophy for science is often professed,\u201d said Panza, \u201cBut in most cases this remains a principled declaration.\u201d The conference\u2019s aim was to encourage detailed exploration into the matter, and to<\/span><b> convene scholars across disciplines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cto reflect on the effective role of philosophy in scientific practice.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;This is why it was crucial for this conference to host world-leading scientists, representing a diversity of disciplines from biology to physics, mathematics, and the social sciences,\u201d added Pradeu. \u201cThese scientists are in the <\/span><b>best possible position <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to determine the extent to which philosophy or philosophers have played a useful role in actual scientific practice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/wordpress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robert Knight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">founding Director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation at UC San Diego, presented a talk entitled \u201c<\/span><b>The Human Microbiome and its Implications for Philosophy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also discussing microbiology was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glowingsquid.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Margaret McFall-Ngai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Faculty Associate in Biology and Biological Engineering at Caltech, with the talk \u201c<\/span><b>The Consequences of Living in a Microbial World<\/b><span href=\"https:\/\/www.maths.ox.ac.uk\/people\/damian.rossler\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Damian R\u00f6ssler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> presented \u201c<\/span><b>Is Philosophy Useful for Mathematics and\/or Vice Versa?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d while CNRS\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radcliffe.harvard.edu\/people\/karine-chemla\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Karine Chemla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> presented \u201c<\/span><b>The Entanglement of Philosophical and Mathematical Reflections in Poncelet\u2019s Introduction of Ideal Elements in Mathematics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Presentations relating to the human mind included \u201c<\/span><b>Philosophy and Neuroscience in the Study of Conscious Perception<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d from Chapman\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/aaron-schurger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aaron Schurger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and \u201cT<\/span><b>he Essential Role of Philosophy in Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d from Caltech\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emotion.caltech.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ralph Adolphs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recordings of many of the conference\u2019s talks can be found on Schmid\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IZcrASzCybs&amp;list=PLXlinOq24a9Qp7irqQ9M0Uefdr5TG8AbP\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">YouTube channel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><b>Chapman has a strong history of interdisciplinary research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d said Michael Ibba, Dean of Schmid College. \u201cIn fact, our president is both a mathematician and a philosopher,\u201d he noted of President Daniele C. Struppa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPhilosophy has relevance across many areas of STEM, and exploring that connection leads to deeper insights for both philosophical and scientific inquiry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dean Ibba discussed this interdisciplinary connection, and the MPP program specifically, in a <\/span><b>recent episode of the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/podcasts\/campus\/2024\/01\/08\/mike-ibba-form-chapman-university-mentorship-and-future-us-science\"><b><i>Inside Higher Ed<\/i><\/b><b> podcast<\/b><\/a><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPhilosophy is a reflection of the <\/span><b>basic conceptual structures we employ to describe the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and to understand it,\u201d added Panza. \u201cThinking philosophically means to put these structures in question and to look for more suitable alternatives.
