Among the new papers:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Desiree Forsythe, a Grand Challenges Initiative postdoctoral fellow, has published a new study in the Journal of Higher Education. Titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00221546.2023.2265285\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Committing to Racial Justice as a White Woman in STEM: Using Constructivist Grounded Theory to Explore White Activism<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the research explores <\/span><b>how to empower women in science and engineering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to create a more equitable and inclusive future for the field. Forsythe will join the faculty at Santa Clara University as an assistant professor of biology this coming fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Citlalli Madrigal \u201924 and Rama Bedri \u201924, undergraduate students studying Environmental Science and Policy, have published a paper titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4441\/16\/3\/450\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Water Whiplash in the Mediterranean Regions of the World<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The paper is co-authored with Chapman faculty Hesham El-Askary and Thomas Piechota, as well as senior research associate Wenzhao Li. The study explores <\/span><b>nearly 100 years of streamflow records across five continents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Andrew Jordan, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2024\/01\/31\/chairs-math-philosophy-and-physics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the newly appointed Kennedy Chair in Physics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, is among the co-authors of a new study titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41567-023-02326-7\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Programmable Heisenberg interactions between Floquet qubits<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the prestigious journal Nature Physics<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The study, led by scientists from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UC Berkeley, also includes Bibek Bhandari and Debmalya Das from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research\/institutes-and-centers\/quantum-studies\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Institute for Quantum Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emma Kocik \u201922, now a doctoral student in earth and environmental sciences at University of Pennsylvania, has led a new study with Senior Associate Dean Christopher Kim and others in the journal Applied Geochemistry. The study is titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0883292724000349\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sulfate enhances the adsorption and retention of Cu(II) and Zn(II) to dispersed and aggregated iron oxyhydroxide nanoparticles<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kocik, who was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2021\/05\/09\/chapman-chemistry-student-earns-prestigious-goldwater-scholarship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chapman\u2019s first Beckman Scholar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, was supported in her research by the Beckman Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brian Hoover and Professor of Biology Walter Piper have published a new study from ongoing research on<\/span><b> common loons in northern Wisconsin. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The study, published in the journal Animal Behavior, demonstrates that the call of male loons changes predictably as the birds age. This indicates that a bird\u2019s call is an honest signal of age and therefore ability to defend territory. The study is titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0003347224000071\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Honest signalling of age in a territorial breeder<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hoover collaborated with Piper as a Grand Challenges Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow and is now a principal scientist for the non-profit <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faralloninstitute.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Farallon Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assistant Professors of Biology Jeremy Hsu and Hagop Atamian, with contributions from Kate Avendano-Woodruff \u201925, have published a new paper describing curriculum in plant biology in the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education. The paper, titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/10.1128\/jmbe.00166-23\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Promoting student interest in plant biology through an inquiry-based module exploring plant circadian rhythm, gene expression, and defense against insects<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, presents a<\/span><b> weeklong curricular module for high school biology students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that promotes knowledge of phytohormones, the circadian clock, and the Central Dogma.
