Glineburg\u2019s study shows that <\/span><b>inhibiting a key step in this stress response pathway can increase neurodegeneration, suggesting<\/b> <b>a role for stress response pathways in mitigating the onset of disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It includes student co-author Jaclyn Pak \u201923.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/sun-yang\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sun (Coco) Yang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (School of Pharmacy) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/cyril-rakovski\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cyril Rakovski<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Computational and Data Sciences, Schmid College of Science and Technology) have been awarded a Merck Investigator-Initiated Study Grant of $130,000 for their project titled \u201cEvaluating the Impact of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) Infection on Infants and Children During the COVID and RSV Control Era.&#8221; This interdisciplinary team will investigate <\/span><b>changes in hMPV infection rates among infants and young children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, further characterizing the infection&#8217;s impact across different age groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/patricia-castro-lopes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Patricia Lopes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, associate professor of biological sciences and the Wang-Fradkin Junior Professor, has published a new paper entitled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcgenomics.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12864-024-10653-z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The effect of acute social isolation on neural molecular responses in components of the social decision-making network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d The study, which is published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BMC Genomics<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>explores how short periods of isolation can change the brain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Six current and former Chapman University undergraduates are co-authors, including Madeleine Chang, Biola Fatusin, Sachin Patel, Chandler Siemonsma, and Morgan Kindel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/jeremy-hsu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeremy Hsu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, assistant professor of biological sciences, has published a new paper entitled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s12052-024-00208-x\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Defining evolution: exploring students\u2019 conceptions of evolution in introductory biology courses<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Hsu and colleagues <\/span><b>studied how more than 300 students define and conceive of evolution,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> finding that students held a number of different conceptions that were often not normative. Definitions of evolution did not vary among 2- and 4-year college students or among different majors of study. The research is published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Evolution: Education and Outreach<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and includes co-author <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/kate-hill\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kate Hill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, assistant instructional professor of biological sciences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/daniel-alpay\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daniel Alpay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Foster G. and Mary McGaw Professorship in Mathematical Sciences, has published a new paper entitled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1063520324000666?via%3Dihub\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Short-time Fourier transform and superoscillations<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Alpay worked with former Grand Challenges Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow Kamal Diki and with President Daniele Struppa to investigate <\/span><b>new results on the theory of superoscillations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> using time-frequency analysis tools and techniques such as the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and the Zak transform. The study builds on work by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/yakir-aharonov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yakir Aharonov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who is the Co-Director of the Institute for Quantum Studies, Professor of Theoretical Physics, and the James J.
