Justice Neil Gorsuch’s first major action on the U.S. Supreme Court was the deciding vote to let Arkansas begin executing a group of death-row inmates. How will Justice Gorsuch’s appointment affect environmental, social, or political issues that are important to you?
- Not very much. The SCOTUS continues to have a conservative slant and Gorsuch appears to be more moderate than Scalia. I think there is potential that Roe v. Wade will remain law of the land, and potential for environmental laws that help reduce climate change. This is based off the info I currently have; it is subject to change.
- I am particularly happy that Gorsuch is on the Court. He will check federal and executive power, and has a steadfast record of protecting our Constitutional rights.
- Gorsuch has proven in his writings and previous decisions that he looks at laws without any consideration of their impact, a true “originalist” who does not consider the 21st century in “interpreting” the Constitution, which was written before African Americans (of any gender) or women had the right to vote; before we had any issues of privacy and technology; broad health care needs, billion dollar corporations, etc., etc. He is to the right of Scalia. He does not believe in any situation in which it is okay to have an abortion – as he considers a fetus – or even a zygote – to have the same rights as a woman. He is smart and amiable – and he is NOT a moderate in any way, let alone progressive or left-leaning. Scary times.
