All full-time staff, faculty, and students have access to the Doti-Struppa Rock Wall with a valid Chapman ID card. Between February 26th and March 10th, the facility will be having certification classes from 7:00pm-9:00pm, open gym classes from 9:00pm-11:00pm Monday – Friday, and 1:00pm-4:00pm open gym hours on Saturdays. The classes are designed to make sure each participant understands the safety procedures and policies in place.
If you are not belay test certified, but you want to climb, open gym hours allow you to come into the facility and have one of our staff members belay you, or a friend who is certified in our facility may belay you.
We require that each student passes our belay test in order to climb. If you are an experienced climber, you may take our 30 minute belay check session which includes an orientation of the Doti-Struppa Rock Wall followed by a test of belay command skills. These sessions are designed for experienced climbers. Belay checks are limited to four (4) participants to ensure personal attention. Guests must pass a test at the end of the belay check in order to receive a belay card.
However, if you are a beginner or novice climber who does not know the basic safety procedures such as a figure eight know, the proper belay commands, etc., we have a belay lesson that is an hour and a half which includes an orientation of the Doti-Struppa Rock Wall followed by instruction on belay techniques, commands, inspections, gear, and knot tying. These sessions are designed for beginner to intermediate climbers with novice experience. Training sessions are limited to four (4) participants to ensure personal attention. Guests must pass a test at the end of the belay lesson in order to receive a belay card.
We look forward to seeing you in the rock wall. Climb on!
