Twenty Years Ago &#8211; By Charlene Baldwin, Dean and Librarian Emerita"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>First published in Grey Panther, the official newsletter of the Retired and Emeriti Faculty Association of Chapman University<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Detours!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The orientation assistants for the freshman class in 2003 chose \u201cDetours\u201d for their theme.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because for their next year, the center of campus was fenced off to finalize the most sweeping and ambitious building project in Chapman\u2019s history.\u00a0 Thanks to the vision of President Jim Doti, the dedicated work of EVP for Development Sheryl Bourgeois, the\u00a0 committed support of the Board of Trustees, and the generosity of many donors, FOUR\u00a0 buildings were being constructed all at the same time.\u00a0 Which were they?<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-298\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/town-and-gown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2025\/01\/Oliphant.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"147\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/town-and-gown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2025\/01\/Oliphant.jpg 323w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/town-and-gown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2025\/01\/Oliphant-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" \/>Oliphant Hall <\/strong>became the modernized addition to Bertea Hall to support the College of Performing Arts, specifically the Conservatory of Music.\u00a0 The Hall was named in honor of Rachel \u201cToni\u201d Oliphant, one of the Knott sisters, daughters of the founders of Knotts Berry Farm.\u00a0 The building, designed by Los Angeles-based architectural firm AC Martin, would feature soundproof practice rooms, teaching rooms, a lecture hall, orchestral recital halls, and a lavish office for then Dean Bill Hall, complete with his grand piano.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-297\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/town-and-gown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2025\/01\/Leatherby.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"128\" \/>The Leatherby Libraries <\/strong>was also designed by AC Martin, to occupy the same footprint as the former Thurmond Clarke Memorial Library, but\u00a0 5 times larger.\u00a0 Over 50 founding donors gave a total of $27 million to design and build the new library, named in honor of the Leatherby Family, especially the late Board of \u00a0Trustee member Ralph Leatherby and spearheaded by his daughter, Board member Joann Leatherby.\u00a0 The library would feature nine distinct libraries representing the major disciplinary foci of Chapman\u2019s research and teaching.\u00a0 The library would include group\u00a0 study rooms, a caf\u00e9, a terrace overlooking the athletic field, a large reading room with gallery walls, multimedia preview rooms for\u00a0 state of the art access to digital information, plenty of room for physical and digital collections and computers, service centers to help students with their research needs, classrooms, \u00a0and a variety of seating throughout the 5 floors. With an emphasis on art exhibitions, lecture series, and special collections such as the Center for American War Letters, the Holocaust Memorial Library, and the Huell Howser Archives, the library attracted people throughout the campus and community.\u00a0 Millions of people have visited the Leatherby Libraries since its founding.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0The \u201cMillennial Dean\u201d, Charlene Baldwin, was part of the project from its inception.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-296 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/town-and-gown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2025\/01\/Fish.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"128\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fish Interfaith Center . <\/strong>\u00a0A chapel on campus had been the dream of the faith based communities at Chapman and the City of Orange for decades, and the Fish Interfaith Center with its\u00a0 Sanctuary, Garden of the Senses, Columbarium, Meditation and Prayer Room, and Chapel finally realized that dream.\u00a0 It was designed by David Martin of AC Martin, and named in honor of Merle and Marjorie Fish whose family remains committed to its success even to this day. The Dean of the Chapel, the Rev. Ron Farmer, shepherded the creation of \u00a0the Fish\u00a0 Interfaith Center truly to become the welcoming home of all faiths, and a showcase of symbolic art.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-300\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/town-and-gown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2025\/01\/Picture6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/town-and-gown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2025\/01\/Picture6.png 451w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/town-and-gown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2025\/01\/Picture6-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/>Glass Hall.<\/strong>\u00a0 To complete the swath of construction, and in order to meet Chapman\u2019s \u00a0growing student population, Glass Residence Hall \u00a0was also under construction at the same time. \u00a0Named for \u00a0Jerrold and Jacqueline Glass, it would become the residence for first-year and continuing undergraduate students. The Hall would feature secure gated access, study rooms,\u00a0 shaded courtyards, and modernized, safe, and functional residential spaces.\u00a0 Dean of Students Joe Kertes shaped the vision for this new residence hall, also opened in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>So, in the Fall of 2004, these buildings were completed and ready to open and welcome Chapman\u2019s faculty, students, researchers, and the wider Chapman community. \u00a0\u00a0How to celebrate this monumental achievement?\u00a0 Each building offered separate dedications throughout the semester, but on homecoming weekend, 2004, a succession of events at each new facility welcomed everyone\u00a0 to campus.\u00a0 It was quite a success!<\/p>\n<p>Now, here we are twenty years later, in the Fall of 2024, and we celebrate again. Each building, in its own way, will commemorate this anniversary.\u00a0 The Library welcomed Pete the Panther to distribute cookies to hungry students.\u00a0 The Fish Interfaith Center will dedicate a new dais\u00a0\u00a0 in the Wallace All-Faiths Chapel.\u00a0 Oliphant Hall will welcome a new dean.\u00a0 Glass Hall will start the\u00a0 new freshman class on a path of academic success.\u00a0 But, as in all things,\u00a0 academic leadership changes,\u00a0 However, \u00a0with the solid foundation these buildings provide, the commitment remains.<\/p>\n<p>President <strong>Jim Doti<\/strong> is Emeritus and his successor, President Daniele Struppa has announced his retirement in 2025.\u00a0 Former Dean of the Law School, Matt Parlow, has taken over the post of EVP of Development.\u00a0 The Board of Trustees remains strong under its Chair, Parker Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p>And what about the leadership of these 4 buildings\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bill Hall<\/strong> retired, Guilio Ongaro took his place, and now he is retired, and we have a new Dean, Ann F. Hogan.<\/p>\n<p>Founding Dean <strong>Charlene Baldwin<\/strong> retired Emerita \u00a0in 2021, and the former Associate Dean, Kevin Ross, has risen to the Deanship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Farmer<\/strong>, the founding Dean of the Wallace All Faiths Chapel of the Fish Interfaith Center retired, and the\u00a0 Rev. Dr. Gail Stearns took the Fish Interfaith Center to a new level of commitment to ethics and spirituality, as well as diversity and inclusion. She retired Emerita, and her long-time associate, the Rev.
