Standke is researching the regulation of the bacterial enzyme nitrogenase by the protein NifA in hopes that this can one day act as a biofertilizer. If it can, this will reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe supply plants with fertilizer, which contains usable nitrogen in the form of ammonia,\u201d Standke explained. \u201cHowever, fertilizers are difficult to make and are bad for the environment because they contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The process of making fertilizer also leads to \u201csoil acidification and pollution of local groundwater.\u201d Alternative fertilizers are therefore being examined to find a better way to supply plants with ammonia.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, Standke was able to carry out this research further through her participation in SURF &#8211; the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship &#8211; which is overseen by the Center for Undergraduate Excellence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1151\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1151\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2019\/12\/standke6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"203\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heidi conducting research in lab<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A highly competitive program, the SURF program awards funding to students who present themselves as promising research candidates to conduct research over an eight week period in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it would be a good way to continue my research over the summer months,\u201d said Standke.<\/p>\n<p>Standke also received the Undergraduate Student Scholarly Research\/Creative Grant from the Center for Undergraduate Excellence, and used the funding to buy research materials\u2014such as fluorescently labeled DNA\u2014to assist with her project.<\/p>\n<p>With the goal of understanding the conditions in which the protein NifA is able to bind to DNA and promote nitrogen fixation, Standke expressed that her greatest success during SURF was being able to get good results using \u201cfluorescence anisotropy\u201d which is a quantitative way to study NifA binding to DNA.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1153\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1153\" style=\"width: 283px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1153\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2019\/12\/standke4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"212\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1153\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heidi conducting research in lab<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was with these results that I was able to start making conclusions about NifA and its binding to DNA,\u201d Standke said.<\/p>\n<p>Standke plans to continue her research career, and is currently applying to Ph.D. programs in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and\/or Pathology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis experience over the summer cemented in my mind the path of my future to conduct research and pursue a career in academia, and I am grateful for this opportunity,\u201d said Standke.<\/p>\n<p>Are you interested in becoming a SURF fellow, or applying for scholarship and grant opportunities?
