Got a taste for what research\/creative activity is like at the \u201cStrategies for Getting Involved in UG Research and Creative Activity Panel\u201d? Ready to work up the courage to talk to some professors about the projects they have going on? Then the Faculty Research and Creative Scholars Expo is the perfect place to put your thoughts into action!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Join us on Wednesday, September 29th from 5:00-7:00PM via zoom to hear from a variety of faculty from various disciplines. The Expo will feature breakout rooms with individual faculty members and fellow undergraduates in their lab who are thrilled to be sharing their research with you all. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to talk with faculty members, learn about research and creative activity they are doing, and consider participating in some of the exciting projects happening here on campus. Many students who get involved with in-depth research and creative activity consider it the highlight of their Chapman University experience. Meet and learn about some of the returning faculty below!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with our students is an important part of our job. If it were just research, I would simply find a new career! I <\/span>want<\/span><\/i> to be an educator. I <\/span>want<\/span><\/i> to teach students. I\u2019ve always said that undergraduates are the lifeblood of a university. The time in undergrad is filled with seemingly infinite possibilities. You can feel that energy and excitement in our community and spaces\u201d Dr. Allen says. <\/span>\u201cNobody shows up knowing what\u2019s going on. We all had to learn somewhere. Even the most distinguished professors were once novice undergrads or lowly research assistants. Also the professors who choose to attend these kinds of events are open to discussing and talking with anyone. It\u2019s why we volunteered to be there!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an essential part of the process of involving students in faculty research. Students have the chance to browse through all of the different faculty research that is going on at Chapman, all in one place, and get a feel for what appeals to them. From a faculty mentor\u2019s perspective, this helps me to identify students that are motivated and excited about research and that have a specific interest in the kind of research that I do\u201d Dr. Schurger says. <\/span>\u201cWe (faculty) don\u2019t expect you to be experts. In fact, we don\u2019t expect you to know anything about research, let alone the particular lines of research that each of us is engaged in. You are students, and we know that! We are looking for students who are excited about research, interested in learning more and getting some experience, or maybe just curious about research. Maybe you just want to know more about what research is like and then take that perspective with you into some other field of your choice, like literature, film, or economics. The event is informal and a chance to meet people and talk about science or other scholarly or creative activity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Faculty Research Expo is beneficial to faculty across the curriculum.\u00a0 Often we meet students in our classes who want to engage in research\/creative activity with us. But that is only a limited population of students. FRE gives faculty a chance to reach beyond their classes, disciplines, and colleges to find interested students\u201d Dr. Bidmead says. <\/span>\u201cDon\u2019t be intimidated. We are here to work with you! Faculty who participate in the Expo have had much experience working with students. Otherwise, they wouldn\u2019t participate. Faculty members were undergraduates once too and learned by working with their own faculty mentors. While the overall research project might seem complex to you now, think about it as you would when you enroll in a class. When you first start the class, the material seems daunting and complex, the words and concepts foreign, the data overwhelming, but by the end of class when you are doing your final project or exam, you have mastered the material and it doesn\u2019t seem so overwhelming anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
