It is an eight-week program that is hosted on Chapman University campus. SURF Fellows receive a $4,000 fellowship and have the option to request free housing during the program. To become a SURF fellow, students apply and are chosen from a competitive pool of applicants. Last summer, Karli Lonnquist \u201826 was one of the select few chosen for the SURF program and had the opportunity to adapt and produce a play.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 326px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2124\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2025\/11\/IMG_6604.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"434\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Karli presenting her research at the Summer Undergraduate Showcase<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being a theatre and peace studies double major, Lonnquist expressed that she is both an artist and a scholar, and how those aspects of her personality could\u00a0impact\u00a0the world in a unique way.\u00a0\u201cI think those two things are the perfect intersection&#8230;arts have a lot of power\u00a0and\u00a0scholarship has\u00a0a lot of power,\u201d\u00a0said Lonnquist.\u00a0Seeking an outlet to\u00a0find ways to bring art and research together,\u00a0Lonnquist was first made aware of the SURF program by Dr. Jocelyn Buckner.\u00a0\u201cI went and did a whole bunch of looking into it&#8230;I was starting to see what kind of questions\u00a0[I wanted]\u00a0to engage with in SURF and how I might do that from my unique, interesting theatrical peace studies pe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rspective,\u201d said Lonnquist.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lonnquist\u2019s SURF project was looking at how contemporary adaptations of historical plays could be a new\u00a0methodology\u00a0for conflict resolution, particularly\u00a0what it would look like in modern United States. She adapted\u00a0the\u00a01944\u00a0play\u00a0titled\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No Exit,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which was originally written\u00a0during the occupation of France\u00a0in World War II\u00a0by French playwright Jean-Paul Sartre.\u00a0\u00a0This play explores existentialism, and Lonnquist took that exploration and applied it to modern society. \u201cI thought that there were a lot of parallels between that specific form of existentialism and modern-day political polarization in the United States&#8230;and our ideas\u00a0of the American dream&#8230;how\u00a0[it]\u00a0resonates\u00a0differently for\u00a0different people and has shifted over time,\u201d said Lonnquist. She took Sartre\u2019s central themes of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No Exit\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and reimagined them. After extensive research on the original play,\u00a0analysis, interviews, workshops, and reading about adaptations, Lonnquist wrote\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last Exit<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The SURF program gave Lonnquist the opportunity to create her play. She was also granted a scholarly\/creative grant, which has allowed her to put <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last Exit\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">into production in November 2025. \u201cI really do think it&#8217;s an important play and it&#8217;s a timely play&#8230;History can provide tools to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">respond to conflict, respond to pain, and respond to confusion,\u201d said Lonnquist. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 422px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2126\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2025\/11\/LEMeandCast-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"422\" height=\"282\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Karli with her cast and crew for the production of her play<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lonnquist saw man<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y different types of research and creative projects during her SURF program. \u201c[Center for Undergraduate Excellence] really endeavored to support all different kinds of inquiries and all different kinds of student scholarly and creative people&#8230;It\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a really unique way to get involved with other disciplines at Chapman,\u201d said Lonnquist. Along with research, SU<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">RF provides an opportunity to build community and bond with peers. \u201cWe also had community bonding days. The 2026 SURF program will take place from June to August.
