{"id":230,"date":"2017-03-16T21:52:39","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T21:52:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/undergraduate-excellence\/2017\/03\/16\/faculty-profile-dr-keykavous-parang\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T17:00:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T17:00:01","slug":"faculty-profile-dr-keykavous-parang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/2017\/03\/16\/faculty-profile-dr-keykavous-parang\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Profile: Dr. Keykavous Parang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-250 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/Parang_K.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"198\" \/>Dr. Keykavous Parang&#8211;Professor and\u00a0Associate Dean of Research, Graduate Studies and Global Affairs in the School of Pharmacy&#8211;is especially interested in the areas of medicinal chemistry and drug delivery. \u201cThe emphasis of my research lies at the interface between chemistry and biology with specific projects being focused in the fields of organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, nanomedicine, and drug delivery.&#8221; He goes on to explanation the intersection between chemistry, biology, and drug delivery:\u00a0&#8220;Our research can be appropriately described as \u2018the application of synthetic organic chemistry to problems in biology.\u2019&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">Dr. Parang regularly presents his work at both national and international conferences. Recently, he recently presented his work at in Pacifichem 2015 in\u00a0Honolulu, Hawaii. Like many researchers, Parang finds interaction with colleagues during such professional meetings integral to his own work.\u00a0\u201cThe conference platforms provided me the opportunity to network with other scientists in the field and initiate collaboration. Many of these collaborations provided the opportunity of having a number of students and visitor scientists from other institutions in my laboratory. Furthermore, many of the collaborative work led to publications in peer-reviewed journals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-251 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/Parang-in-the-lab-580x385-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/Parang-in-the-lab-580x385-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/Parang-in-the-lab-580x385-1.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/>In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Parang is enthusiastic about working with students. As a faculty mentor, he and his students have worked with Chapman University\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc\">Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">) as part of several programs, including the 291\/491\/682 coursework and the SURF program. Under his mentorship, Kathy Travakoli (\u201816) was awarded a SURF fellowship for her project \u201cDesign and Evaluation of Peptides as Drug Delivery Tools.\u201d This project focused, according to Parang, on a \u201cnew approach for treatment of diseases such as cancer and HIV in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">Parang encourages students to get involved with the various research and creative opportunities available at Chapman University. \u201cDiscovering and being innovative can be one of the most enjoyable moments of the life,&#8221; he says.\u00a0&#8220;For a scientist, nothing can be more exciting than to do something that nobody has ever done. \u00a0My advice to students is to follow their passion and heart to explore an area of science that make them excited in research.\u201d He also recommends that students get in touch with an \u201cempathic\u201d advisor. \u201cMake sure to find a good mentor to guide and motivate you along the path. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-266 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/cropped-image-41.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/cropped-image-41.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/cropped-image-41-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/cropped-image-41-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/>Finally, learn to apply your research experience in real life experiences.
