To find out,\u00a0they run a fun, innovative research group known as the #SwampMonsters. \u201cIt turns out that wetlands play a really important role in regulating the Earth\u2019s climate,&#8221; they say.\u00a0&#8220;These ecosystems store an estimated quadrillion pounds of carbon in their soils (that is a thousand trillion pounds of carbon, or 60-times the amount of carbon released each year from burning fossil fuels on the planet). Wetlands are also the largest natural source of the potent greenhouse gas methane to the atmosphere. This means that we need to understand wetlands if we want to understand global climate change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">Both professors have mentored multiple students at Chapman University. \u201cWe have had SURF students conduct summer research,&#8221; they note.\u00a0And OURCA Travel Grants\u00a0&#8220;have allowed our students to attend national conferences.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/funding-opportunities\/travel-grants.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: #0563c1\">OURCA<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"> is Chapman University\u2019s Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, and the OURCA\u00a0Travel Grant program\u00a0supports undergraduate\u00a0student (and faculty mentor)\u00a0travel to present research and\/or creative activity at regional, national, and even international conferences. In cooperation with other funding sources on campus, the grants cover travel, lodging, and conference registration fees.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-244 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/swampmonster3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/swampmonster3.png 455w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/03\/swampmonster3-238x300.png 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">In fact, with the support of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/funding-opportunities\/travel-grants.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: #0563c1\">OURCA<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">, Chapman\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/students\/life\/student-government\/finance.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: #0563c1\">Student Government Association<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">and<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/scst\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: #0563c1\">Schmid College of Science and Technology<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">, Dr. Keller&#8217;s and Dr. Medveff\u2019s students presented \u00a0their research at national meetings of the Society of Wetland Scientists in Portland, OR, and\u00a0Providence, RI, and hope to\u00a0present in Puerto Rico this coming\u00a0summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\">In addition to their work on wetlands, Keller and Medvedeff Zalman\u00a0want to enliven\u00a0the way research is perceived. \u201cFar too often we view research (at least research in the sciences) as a sterile endeavor carried out by a bunch of nerds in lab coats hunched silently over a lab bench. \u00a0This is nonsense.
