Surprisingly,\u00a0he\u2019s equally passionate about creative pursuits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">In addition to his work as an engineer, Mike Paul Hughes is an accomplished musician, composer, and producer. Moreover, Hughes\u2019s aerospace career has lead to many unexpected opportunities in the entertainment industry. \u201cI was asked by Red Bull to be an ambassador for their Hacking Creativity project, and I produced a music video for them and presented it at their creative conference, Glimpses. Just recently, Hughes\u00a0worked &#8220;as the technical and script advisor for a new French TV series called STRATUM, which features a dramatic human return from space.\u201d He also <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-275 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/OREX-Mike.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/OREX-Mike.jpg 2272w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/OREX-Mike-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/OREX-Mike-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/OREX-Mike-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/OREX-Mike-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/OREX-Mike-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/>hosted a television pilot entitled <i>Hollywood in Space,<\/i> which explains sci-fi technology with the help of physics-minded aerospace engineers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><br \/>\nThrough his work in both research and creative activity, Hughes has learned many valuable lessons regarding critical thinking. For example, he says, \u201cthe phrase \u2018two heads are better than one\u2019 reminds us to share some of our independent thinking with others, or divide up the task into parts assigned to specialists, to work in teams. We have to do this for success in aerospace, and everywhere. But failure finds the cracks between groups and teams, in the places where there is no document and has never been a failure before.\u201d Through his many creative and scholarly interests and\u00a0experiences, Hughes has come to believe that \u00a0\u201cindependent, creative, intellectual challenge leads to mission success\u201d and that \u201cgroupthink leads to failure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-274 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/Mike-Orion-talk-at-METal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"412\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/Mike-Orion-talk-at-METal.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/Mike-Orion-talk-at-METal-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/04\/Mike-Orion-talk-at-METal-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/>Mike Paul Hughes will deliver his keynote address on Wednesday, May 10th, at 12:00pm during this semester&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/events\/student-research-day.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">Chapman University Research Day<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">.
