As part of her undergraduate studies, Taylor worked with Chapman University\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> to conduct her own independent research for course credit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">Taylor was mentored by Dr.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/justin-dressel\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">Justin Dressel<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> on her project entitled \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.chapman.edu\/cusrd_abstracts\/211\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">Linear Feedback Stabilization for a Continuously Monitored Qubit<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">.\u201d Of her work, she says,\u00a0\u201cThe fundamental unit of quantum computers\u00a0is the quantum bit or qubit, a particle which exists in a superposition of two states. Our project sought to stabilize qubits of a superconducting architecture by subjecting them to a continuous measurement while simultaneously feeding back control pulses based on the outcome of these measurements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">Not only was Taylor able to present her research at Chapman University\u2019s semi-annual <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/events\/student-research-day.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">Student Research Day<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">, but she was also able to present her work at the American Physical Society March Meeting, the largest gathering of physicists in the world. \u201cThis week-long meeting enabled me to meet many of the leaders in my and other fields,&#8221; she pointed out. And she added,\u00a0&#8220;We will now publish a paper based on our work.\u201d Students in OURCA-based coursework and funding programs are encouraged to present and publish the products of their labor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">Getting involved in research at the undergraduate level has had an impact on Taylor\u2019s future life and\u00a0career. She will continue to study quantum information through her research at Harvard University, where she will begin her PhD in theoretical physics next Fall. She encourages all undergraduate students to get involved with the many research opportunities available at Chapman University, especially in Physics. \u201cJust do it!\u201d she says. \u201cPhysics is cool.
