In 2016, for example, she was selected to participate in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/funding-opportunities\/surf-program.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">SURF<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> program, a highly competitive, paid, on-campus summer fellowship that allows each participating student to pursue research and creative activity under the guidance of a full-time faculty mentor during the summer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">As a participant in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity\u2019s<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/funding-opportunities\/surf-program.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">SURF<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> program, Jessica worked under the guidance of Dr. Wendy Salmond to conduct her independent research project entitled &#8220;The Invisible Artist: Reframing William Holman Hunt&#8217;s Work Through 15th Century Netherlandish Art.&#8221; As Jessica delved into her research over the summer, she was surprised to find that many critics spoke negatively of artist William Holman Hunt\u2019s work during the Pre-Raphaelite Movement. These overt criticisms inspired Jessica to research whether or not a new perspective on Hunt\u2019s work might be gained by examining the influence of 15th-century Netherlandish art on his paintings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><br \/>\nB<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-334 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/05\/jes.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/05\/jes.png 759w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/05\/jes-300x217.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/>ecause Jessica had such a positive experience with the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/funding-opportunities\/surf-program.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">SURF<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> fellowship program, she continued working with the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> as an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/resources-for-undergraduates\/become-an-ambassador%20.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA Ambassador<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/resources-for-undergraduates\/become-an-ambassador%20.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA Ambassadors<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> are a group of highly-motivated students who have a passion for research and\/or creative activities. They serve as liaisons for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/resources-for-undergraduates\/become-an-ambassador%20.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> at various events, discussing and highlighting all <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> has to offer with faculty, students, and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><br \/>\nAccording to Jessica, working as an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/resources-for-undergraduates\/become-an-ambassador%20.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA Ambassador<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> \u201cseemed like the logical next step,\u201d because of her strong passion for research. \u201cI wanted to make sure that other people knew about the many programs that were available to them,\u201d she said, \u201cespecially [students] within Wilkinson and the art department.\u201d She added that there were many surprising benefits to volunteering as an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/resources-for-undergraduates\/become-an-ambassador%20.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA Ambassador<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">, including gaining experience with public speaking. \u201cIt\u2019s an important life skill that you learn [as an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/resources-for-undergraduates\/become-an-ambassador%20.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA Ambassador<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">].\u201d Another\u00a0benefit\u00a0was \u201clearning how to relate your research experience to other people who might be outside of your discipline.\u201d Moreover, she added that,\u00a0as an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/resources-for-undergraduates\/become-an-ambassador%20.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA Ambassador<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">, you\u2019re able to talk about your \u201cresearch in a way that [gets] other people excited about doing their own research projects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">Her experiences\u00a0as an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/resources-for-undergraduates\/become-an-ambassador%20.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA Ambassador<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> and participating in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/funding-opportunities\/surf-program.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">SURF<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"> program led to other opportunities for\u00a0Jessica\u2019s life and career. She recently received a grant and is currently working in the art collections department at Chapman University, where she is organizing an exhibition for Chicano muralist Emigdio Vasquez. She\u2019s conducting this research project in conjunction with Manon Wogahn and under the supervision of faculty mentor Denise Johnson. Moreover, Jessica has gained some exciting networking opportunities through her participating in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">OURCA<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">\u2019s many programs. For example, she was able to meet <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/ourca\/2016\/12\/05\/cusrd-keynote-speaker-nancy-perloff-ph-d\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: #1155cc\">Nancy Perloff Ph.D.<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">, the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Collections for the Getty Research Institute.\u00a0In addition, Jessica will serve in the new position leading the OURCA Ambassadors\u00a0next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-335 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/05\/jessica.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/05\/jessica.png 510w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2017\/05\/jessica-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/>Not surprisingly, Jessica would encourage all students to consider undergraduate research. \u201cThe first step,\u201d she said, \u201cis to find a faculty mentor and once you get that first opportunity, all the rest fall into place. You kind of just have to jump into it.
