Rose Mackenzie (\u201917) is pursuing a double major in Theater Studies and Philosophy, and a minor in Women\u2019s Studies and she spent the summer researching with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/index.aspx\">the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity\u2019s<\/a> SURF program.<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/office-undergraduate-research-creative-activity\/funding-opportunities\/surf-program.aspx\">Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship<\/a> gives undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue research and creative activity under the guidance of full-time faculty mentors during the summer.\u00a0Accepted applicants are paid to work for ten weeks with their mentor and alongside students of similar ambition and varied disciplines as they attend professional workshops and faculty seminars.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-68 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2016\/10\/Trifles-1-002.jpg\" alt=\"trifles-1-002\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2016\/10\/Trifles-1-002.jpg 824w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2016\/10\/Trifles-1-002-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2016\/10\/Trifles-1-002-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rose spent the summer of 2016 working closely with her mentor Dr. Jocelyn Buckner on the project, \u201cPerforming Queer Femininities.\u201d Rose created the project as, \u201can exploration of sexuality positioning women and femmes in theater.\u201d The process was essentially a vast literature review, where she dug through theory texts, plays, the work of individual artists and queer women collectives to analyze \u201cthemes and potential for empowerment rather than just representation,\u201d and \u201chow interior\/exterior sexuality affects performers, writers, and directors on and offstage.\u201d Her SURF project and continued work will lead to \u201ccreating a Queer dramaturgy\u2026 a kind of How To\/How To Not guide\u201d in producing successful queer theater.<\/p>\n<p>Her ultimate goal is \u201cto bring a play to Chapman University that will be effective and affecting to as many audience slices as possible.\u201d She strives to find the balance of ensuring \u201cthe core focus is making this work safe and humanizing for Queer bodies\u201d while making \u201cit affecting to straight audiences while being unapologetically Queer and femme.\u201d Ultimately, Rose says, \u201cI need to find a way to defend my community\u201d and she\u2019s taken to research and art to do so.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-71 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2016\/10\/Femmes-1-002.jpg\" alt=\"femmes-1-002\" width=\"205\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2016\/10\/Femmes-1-002.jpg 586w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/undergraduate-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2016\/10\/Femmes-1-002-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/>Interested in Rose\u2019s work? The festival is being produced by three SURF alums, including Rose, Shannon Corenthin, and Lena Romano.
