Eight Students Represent Chapman at National Conference<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Chapman MA\nProgram in War and Society Studies<\/a> was well represented at the 86th<\/sup>\nAnnual Meeting of the Society for Military History held in Columbus, Ohio from\nMay 9-12, 2019. The theme of the conference, \u201cSoldiers and Civilians in the\nCauldron of War,\u201d allowed Chapman University students a chance to showcase\ntheir expertise in a wide range of topics on the relationships between war and\nsociety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, May 11th<\/sup>, three Chapman students presented their work based on research conducted in the university\u2019s Center for American War Letters. The panel, titled \u201cThe Thrills and Horrors of War,\u201d included Kalie Rudolph who gave her paper on \u201cBattling Disease and the Germans: A Soldier\u2019s <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Struggle to Maintain Good Health During the Great War.\u201d Montserrate Gastelum followed with a discussion on \u201cThe Patriotic Volunteer,\u201d a review of World War I participation from both soldiers and civilians. Finally, Robbie Del Toro presented on the American war in Vietnam with his paper, \u201cDuality of Man: What Identity Takes Over in Combat?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, three Chapman graduate students participated on\nthe panel \u201cThe Cauldron of War: Reflections of Society in War Letters.\u201d Lara\nJacobson presented her work on World War II in a paper called \u201cNaivety in the\nPacific.\u201d Jesse Faugstad followed with a conversation on the Cold War,\n\u201cFighting to Live: The American Dream at War.\u201d Dominic So completed the trio\nwith a paper on \u201cHumanity Amidst the Inhumanity of the Vietnam War.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, two War and Society students were part of the panel\n\u201cUngentlemanly Warfare: Reassessing Wartime Gender Identity in the Modern Era.\u201d\nCameron Carlomagno presented a portion of her MA thesis, \u201cWomen in a Man\u2019s War:\nThe Employment of Female Agents in the Special Operations Executive,\n1940-1946.\u201d And Paige Gulley showcased her work in American war letters with\n\u201c\u2018After all, who takes care of the Red Cross\u2019s morale?\u2019: The Importance of\nCamaraderie among Red Cross Clubmobile Workers during World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All eight students represented Chapman in exemplary fashion. As Professor Charissa Threat of the Department of History described it, the occasion \u201cafforded our students the ability to collaborate and socialize with experts in the field of military history, discussing advance research techniques, historic methodologies, real-world applications and employment opportunities.\u201d Threat, who also chaired a panel at the conference, shared how \u201cour students did a phenomenal job of delivering and discussing their original research in presentations to attendees at the conference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of note, also in attendance and moderating a panel on the\naftermath of World War I was Professor Jennifer Keene, the incoming Dean of\nWilkinson College, who successfully completed her two-year term as the\npresident of the Society for Military History.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
