{"id":11835,"date":"2020-02-07T15:58:28","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T23:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/wilkinson\/2020\/02\/07\/wilkinson-surf-fellows-research-far-from-home\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T23:51:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T23:51:48","slug":"wilkinson-surf-fellows-research-far-from-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/2020\/02\/07\/wilkinson-surf-fellows-research-far-from-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Wilkinson SURF Fellows Research Far From Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wilkinson students Prabhnoor Kaur (Art History, \u201820) and Michael MacInnes (History, \u201820) spent their final summer in college doing something most don\u2019t: traveling\u00a0 more than 2,000 miles from campus to do in-depth research..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kaur and MacInnes participated in SURF\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research\/center-for-undergraduate-excellence\/funding-opportunities\/surf-program.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014headed by the Center for Undergraduate Excellence. These highly competitive fellowships span 8 weeks during the summer and fellows are expected to perform an average of 30 hours of research or creative activity per week during the SURF program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt really confirmed for me that I want to do research because this is what I\u2019m passionate about,&#8221; Kaur said. &#8220;It encouraged me to do better\u2014to think about the ways in which I\u2019m talking about what I\u2019m talking about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSURF really gives you the funds, the ability, and the time to work it all out and get [your work] to where you really want it to be,\u201d said MacInnes, who included this experience in his resume. \u201cBeing able to do research is a skill that translates into a lot of different jobs or experiences later in life, like being able to think critically about information and being able to write about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11838\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11838\" style=\"width: 141px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11838\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/SURFDay1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"141\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/SURFDay1.jpg 341w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/SURFDay1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 141px) 100vw, 141px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11838\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prabhnoor Kaur (Art History, \u201820)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Kaur decided to investigate the history of violence and indentured labor in the West Indies. While researching artists that emerged out of the South Asian Diaspora, she came across a Denver-based artist, Suchitra Mattai, whose art focuses on the sugar industry in Guiana. With the guidance of Dr. Wendy Salmond and her SURF funding, Kaur flew to Denver to meet and interview Mattai, as well as view some of her work.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11840\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11840\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/unnamedimageo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/unnamedimageo.jpg 512w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/unnamedimageo-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prabhnoor Kaur plans her project with faculty<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the end, Kaur had a lot of independence over when and how she conducted her research. It instilled in her the confidence to host an immersive art exhibit rather than a research paper. Her exhibit featured colonial prints of indentured colonial women and a video Mattai supplied of the Middle Passage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI wanted to do something more experimental,\u201d Kaur said in regards to changing this element of the project. \u201cSURF really pushed me to think about how the form that I\u2019m presenting my research in serves the content.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meanwhile, halfway around the world, MacInnes researched the topic of violence in a totally different way.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11836\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11836\" style=\"width: 137px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11836\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/unnamedmich.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/unnamedmich.png 341w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/unnamedmich-200x300.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 137px) 100vw, 137px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael MacInnes (History, \u201820)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MacInnes chose to do his project on political and ethnic violence in South Africa in the 1980s and 1990s. With the logistics of his trip planned with the help of Dr. Erin Mosely, MacInnes spent two-weeks in South Africa using SURF funding to visit archives and meet academics who could help him with his research. He spent the majority of his time digging into the archives, finding newspaper clippings and old \u201880s cassette interviews that covered the violence in the region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAt first it was kind of intimidating to be by myself, but once I started getting into the groove, I felt a lot more comfortable,\u201d MacInnes recalled about the experience. \u201cIt\u2019s completely different to go there and get a chance to experience the local culture and see the local sights while researching.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11839\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11839\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11839\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/pasted-image-0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/pasted-image-0.png 1600w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/pasted-image-0-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/pasted-image-0-1024x690.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/pasted-image-0-768x517.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/pasted-image-0-1536x1035.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael MacInnes presenting during last Fall&#8217;s student symposium<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the end of the program, MacInnes presented his findings at a student symposium this past December. He said that his SURF research has been instrumental in formulating his senior thesis, which he plans to complete at the end of the spring 2020 semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both Kaur and MacInnes remarked on the sheer collaboration that the program provides. Kaur enjoyed speaking with other SURF fellows doing work that they were \u201creally passionate about,\u201d especially those engaged in political matters. MacInnes agreed, saying the program \u201cgave me a good chance to meet other people doing research, even people who are completely on the other side of the academic spectrum from me.\u201d MacInnes also added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Representation of the humanities is always a good thing.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are you interested in applying to become a SURF fellow?
