{"id":11881,"date":"2020-02-14T15:32:20","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T23:32:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/wilkinson\/2020\/02\/14\/pushing-the-boundaries\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T23:51:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T23:51:48","slug":"pushing-the-boundaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/2020\/02\/14\/pushing-the-boundaries\/","title":{"rendered":"Pushing the Boundaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back in 2017, Wilkinson senior Louisa &#8220;Lou&#8221; Marshall (\u201820) set in motion a chain of events that would turn her into one of the most prolific student journalists in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11885\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11885\" style=\"width: 327px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11885 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/lm-e1581722349294.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"454\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Louisa \u201cLou\u201d Marshall (\u201820) is a History major, Political Science minor, and the Editor-in-Chief of Chapman\u2019s student newspaper, <em>The Panther<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a dance major at New York University, experiencing the 2016 election in the Big Apple brought out an innate curiosity in her. \u201cBeing engaged with the world around me inspired me to change up my career,\u201d she said. \u201cI became interested in understanding why things were the way they were.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In her sophomore year, Marshall moved back home to Southern California enrolling in Chapman and changing her major to History with a minor in Political Science. That\u2019s when she began writing for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Panther<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Chapman\u2019s independent student newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since then, Marshall has gone on to have multiple journalistic experiences. She interned for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the dawn of the #MeToo movement. Her work and career have been featured in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OC Register, OC Weekly, Student Press Law Center,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FIRE<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. She is currently an intern on NBC LA\u2019s Investigative Reporting Team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But one of the most meaningful experiences she\u2019s had thus far has been serving as editor-and-chief of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Panther<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Marshall has led the newsroom as they tackled controversial stories like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepantheronline.com\/news\/campus-targeted-again-by-patriot-front-stickers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">propaganda from a white supremacist group on campus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, School of Communication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepantheronline.com\/opinions\/editorial-please-communicate-lisa-sparks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dean Lisa Spark\u2019s congressional campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepantheronline.com\/news\/media-integrity-center-to-host-former-press-secretaries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">opening of Chapman\u2019s Center for Media Integrity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are Wilkinson<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sat down with Marshall to chat about her time as Editor-in-Chief of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Panther<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong><em>We are Wilkinson<\/em><\/strong>: So you\u2019ve already had an impressive portfolio of work covering a range of stories. Which story are you proudest of?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Lou Marshall<\/strong>: One of the stories I am most proud of is the George Bush coverage that we did. And not necessarily the actual coverage of the event itself, but more because of the stand the newspaper took on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The school communicated to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Panther<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that George Bush\u2019s office would have to review any article of ours before publication, but I declined due to journalistic integrity. I was really proud of us for standing by our morals when it would&#8217;ve been really easy to cave. I think people in authority over student journalists have a tendency to underestimate just how capable we are.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I think people in authority over student journalists have a tendency to underestimate just how capable we are.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>WAW<\/strong>: So when do you know that you\u2019ve written a good story?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>LM<\/strong>: The stories I&#8217;ve always been most proud of have been the ones that actively serve the community, like our recent story on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepanthernewspaper.org\/blog\/chapman-student-arrested-felony\">arrest of a Chapman student<\/a> who was suspected to be under the influence, disrupting his class with racial and homophobic profanities. When I have students messaging me or messaging <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Panther<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Instagram or Facebook saying \u201cthank you for covering this, we\u2019re scared for our safety. Please keep us updated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the end of the day, free press and journalism and working for a newspaper is about serving the community that reads what it is you write. So if I had any kind of hand in assuring students of what was happening on their campus or impacting them to consider their safety in this kind of situation, then that is the best feeling I could get from this job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>WAW<\/strong>: So I would be remiss if I didn\u2019t ask how being a Wilkinson student has helped you become the journalist you are today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>LM<\/strong>:\u00a0 I love Wilkinson. I think we\u2019re the best school on campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wilkinson has armed me with the knowledge to be able to cover just about everything. I\u2019m trying to push myself to take classes I wouldn&#8217;t have taken otherwise. In the History Department, I\u2019m taking classes on Apartheid, the history of technology, and the Middle Ages. I\u2019ve run the gamut of content and topics. Collectively, all of that has enabled me to approach my work with a lot of insight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Wilkinson has armed me with the knowledge to be able to cover just about everything. &#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For instance, with the impeachment trial, I wouldn\u2019t be able to write with authority about an impeachment trial if I wasn\u2019t a history major and a poli sci minor and knew how an impeachment trial worked. It\u2019s so intimately woven, the relationship between journalism and history. And we can really get far into all these different ways the humanities are important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wilkinson\u2019s really challenged me to think critically about the work that I do. Going to the source, doing the research &#8212; those kinds of tangible skills are important. But not only that, questioning those sources, questioning the perspectives of the writer, not accepting things for face-value has been one of the most valuable things I will have taken out of my time here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11886\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/02\/Lou-at-computer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>WAW<\/strong>: So, looking forward, if you had to write a story about anything now or in the future, what would it be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>LM<\/strong>: If there was one story or arc of story that I want to cover, it would be to tell the story of women who have survived sexual assault or rape. And it\u2019s really complicated &#8212; a lot of women understand what coming forward can do to them\u2026Every situation is complicated, but if I could provide a voice and a platform for them to be seen and heard, I would want to do so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>WAW<\/strong>: As you are graduating in May, what advice do you have for aspiring student journalists?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>LM<\/strong>: For inspiring student journalists, get involved with your campus, join your student newspaper. It has been the highlight of my college career. I will leave feeling very proud of the work that I did while I was here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, don\u2019t let anyone push you around. I have been underestimated as a student journalist more times than I can count, to the fault of the person who underestimated me in the first place. Just go for it, don\u2019t let anything hold you back and don\u2019t let someone brush you off because of your age.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Don\u2019t let anyone push you around&#8230; just go for it, don\u2019t let anything hold you back and don\u2019t let someone brush you off because of your age.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>WAW<\/strong>: And finally, what would you like alumni and parents to know about being a student journalist?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>LM<\/strong>: I\u2019ve gotten the opportunity to engage with a lot of alumni. Alumni, please continue to engage with your Chapman community. They&#8217;re doing something that takes a lot of guts. Becoming a journalist right now is really daunting.
