After years of writing college textbooks, with more than a million copies in print, his newest publication, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smashwords.com\/books\/view\/1031335\">The Kingdom<\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was released in July. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Babbie\u2019s \u201cfirst real attempt at fiction\u201d was inspired by his friend, Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2012\/08\/20\/remembering-professor-marv-meyer\/\">Marvin Meyer\u2019s<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Gospel-Thomas-Hidden-Sayings-Jesus\/dp\/006065581X\">Gospel of Thomas: The Hidden Sayings of Jesus<\/a>\u201d.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0A much-beloved professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/religious-studies\/index.aspx\">Religious Studies<\/a>, Meyer held the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/religious-studies\/lecture-series\/index.aspx\">Griset Professor of Bible and Christian Studies<\/a> and was Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research\/institutes-and-centers\/schweitzer-institute\/index.aspx\">Albert Schweitzer Institute<\/a> and was a nationally-renowned expert on Gnosticism. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0He passed away from melanoma in 2012 at the age of 64. The <\/span>Marvin<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> W. <\/span>Meyer<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Faculty <\/span>Athenaeum <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on campus bears his name, and Babbie\u2019s book offers another memorial to Meyer\u2019s lasting impact. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this work of historical fiction, Babbie focuses on the biblical figure of St. Jerome and re-imagines his role at the Council of Carthage (the historical event in which the canon for the Bible was set). In St. Jerome\u2019s fictionalized appearance at the synod he receives a copy of the Gospel of Thomas and becomes taken with it. As the Bible shows, the Gospel does not make the final cut but St. Jerome wants to have it protected for prosperity so he has it sent away\u00a0 to be hidden in Egypt. This plot development cleverly leads to a perfect compilation between fiction and reality because the gospel was eventually found in the Nag Hammadi located in an Upper Egytptian cave in 1945.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Babbie is well aware that his conceptualization of events recounted in the ancient biblical texts will not sit well with all readers, a risk deemed imperative, in order to impart an inspiring and powerful story. He believes that it is \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">necessary to go through some discomfort in dealing with ideas like the ones in [his] book\u201d and his view is unorthodox but ultimately sympathetic. Babbie believes that Jesus\u2019 words in the Gospel of Thomas addresses this notion, \u201cLet one who seeks not stop seeking until one finds. When one finds, one will be troubled.
