This was the opportunity for Michael Wong, a 2015 Chapman alum with a degree in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/graduate-studies\/creative-writing-mfa.aspx\"> Creative Writing<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/index.aspx\"> Wilkinson College<\/a> and CEO and co-founder of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peekavr.com\/\"> Peeka VR<\/a>, a literary tech company that allows children to experience their favorite books using VR technology, to come speak with students in the English Department in a workshop titled, \u201cMake Money Storytelling as a Copywriter in Marketing &amp; Advertising.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13410\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13410\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2021\/05\/Wong.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13410\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13410\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2021\/05\/Wong.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2021\/05\/Wong.jpg 160w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2021\/05\/Wong-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Wong, &#8217;15<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wong\u2019s passionate and encouraging visit was inspiring. It was obvious he wanted those attending to leave the discussion excited for the future. His talk immediately relieved students of their anxieties and was simple and direct. His assertion that we shouldn\u2019t listen to anyone, professor or outsider, tells us that we can only teach with our knowledge of literature and techniques in writing, was reassuring. n other words, he told us that there isn\u2019t any such thing as \u201cwhat we are supposed to do\u201d with our degrees.<\/p>\n<p>In a quick breakdown, these are Wong\u2019s Facts:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Copywriting Basics:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cPeople hate to write.\u201d That is where we are most important!<\/li>\n<li>Marketing, Ads, and PR function are all just slogans, catchphrases, jingles, taglines, commercials, blog posts, website design, brochures, video games,\u00a0 even emails, and anything else you can think of that are meant to catch the attention of the general public to sell a product or service. They all require a creative brain that knows how to grab people\u2019s attention with wordplay.<\/li>\n<li>We may not believe it, but most people know when they are reading something amazing. And not only have we trained to know when something is good, can draw the eye and ears of a spectator, but we are also ones who naturally know when something is capable of having an impact on an audience.<\/li>\n<li>Copywriting is an excellent opportunity to freelance and still manage the life that you want! You are your own agent, you can build client trust that allows you to be creative freely, you have the \u201cpotential\u201d to have a higher return financially, you build your networks,\u00a0 and the job is malleable.<\/li>\n<li>The downfalls to the copywriting life are inconsistent pay, and <i>you are your own agency<\/i>! But when managing yourself, the anxieties of such a life can also be managed by you, right?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>So, how do you feel now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was so hyped about graduating with a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/graduate-studies\/creative-writing-mfa.aspx\"> Master\u2019s Degree in Creative Writing<\/a> that I applied for three jobs immediately after the presentation, without any sort of thought to not getting the jobs. I was just happy to send in my CV and know that those jobs aren\u2019t my last resort.
