{"id":13607,"date":"2021-09-21T13:43:57","date_gmt":"2021-09-21T20:43:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/wilkinson\/2021\/09\/21\/a-celebration-of-history-student-research\/"},"modified":"2021-09-21T13:43:57","modified_gmt":"2021-09-21T20:43:57","slug":"a-celebration-of-history-student-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/2021\/09\/21\/a-celebration-of-history-student-research\/","title":{"rendered":"A Celebration of History Student Research\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The award winning, student-run e-journal,<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.chapman.edu\/vocesnovae\/#:~:text=Voces%20Novae%3A%20Chapman%20University%20Historical,the%20body%20of%20historical%20knowledge.\"> Voces Novae: A Chapman University Historical Review<\/a> is celebrating its thirteenth anniversary this year with topics ranging from how Christianity shaped England in World War I to Native Hawaiian and Japanese American Discourse over Hawaiian Statehood.<\/p>\n<p>Out of twelve papers submitted, five were published by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/history\/phi-alpha-theta.aspx\"> Alpha Mu Gamma Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta<\/a> (History Honors Society). <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2021\/09\/Voces-Novae.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13610\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13610 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2021\/09\/Voces-Novae.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a variety of different topics that were considered in this year\u2019s publication,\u201d said Senior Voces Novae Editor Delaynie Voortman (\u201821, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/history\/index.aspx\">BA History<\/a>; \u201822 MA in Curriculum and Instruction). \u201cMany of them were specifically written about American institutions but some topics ventured onto the European continent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNicole Saito wrote an excellent thesis on Hawaiian Statehood, specifically the political clash between Japanese Americans and Native Hawaiians during this time,\u201d said George Tajonera, Senior Voces Novae Editor (\u201821, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/history\/index.aspx\">BA History<\/a>; minor in Secondary Education, Music Technology; \u201822 MA in Curriculum and Instruction). \u201cThis story stuck out to me because the topic is often brushed over in school classrooms in California. Saito offers an insight into the complexity of horizontal oppression between ethnic minority groups,\u201d he said. (<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.chapman.edu\/vocesnovae\/vol13\/iss1\/4\/\">Read Saito\u2019s thesis<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Voces Novae team carried out the entirety of the editing process virtually. \u201cEven editors\u2019 meetings, which had always been done in person,\u201d said<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/shira-klein\"> Dr. Shira Klein<\/a>, Associate Professor of History and Voces Novae faculty advisor. \u201c It\u2019s amazing how the results are no less impressive than in previous years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the aid of technology on our side, our VN team collaborated and edited for weeks via Google Drive. Luckily, our editorial board did an excellent job in delegating and organizing their teams of editors. This edition would not have been possible without our general editors&#8217; proactivity and vigor,\u201d Tajonera said.<\/p>\n<p>The e-journal is a wonderful opportunity for students to publish their work, which can be added to their CV and shown to potential employers. \u201cIt\u2019s also a concrete step towards grad school for those interested in that route.
