Photo courtesy of Bohm-Duchen&#8217;s lecture&#8217;s source: Charlotte Saloman.Life or Theater? -Jewish Cultural Quarter (jck.nl).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/index.aspx\">Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research\/institutes-and-centers\/holocaust-education\/rodgers-center\/index.aspx\">Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education<\/a> welcomed scholar Monica Bohm-Duchen to speak about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-de\"><i>Life? or Theater?<\/i><\/a>: a compilation of artwork by Charlotte Salomon, <a href=\"https:\/\/events.chapman.edu\/88151\">a talented Berlin-born artist<\/a> who, <a href=\"https:\/\/events.chapman.edu\/88151\">at the age of twenty-six and five months pregnant<\/a>, was murdered at the Auschwitz death camp in World War II.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/the-obsessive-art-and-great-confession-of-charlotte-salomon\"><i>Life? or Theater?<\/i><\/a> is a series of art examining not only artist Charlotte Salomon\u2019s depictions of the Third Reich and an era of Nazi Germany but the struggles Saloman faced in her personal life. From her mother\u2019s death to World War 1 and life at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, Saloman\u2019s work extends into her life and beyond the horrors of the Holocaust. Bohm-Duchen provided extensive insight into Saloman\u2019s artwork and life through her lecture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, what is<i> Leben? Oder Theater? <\/i>What is <i>Life? or Theater? <\/i>It is impossible to categorize, virtually impossible. Every time I reengage with it I am astonished with its originality,\u201d Bohm-Duchen said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/the-obsessive-art-and-great-confession-of-charlotte-salomon\"><i>Life? or Theater?<\/i><\/a> is a series of art examining not only artist Charlotte Salomon\u2019s depictions of the Third Reich and an era of Nazi Germany but the struggles Saloman faced in her personal life. From her mother\u2019s death to World War 1 and life at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, Saloman\u2019s work extends into her life and beyond the horrors of the Holocaust. Bohm-Duchen provides extensive insight into Saloman\u2019s artwork and life through her lecture.<\/p>\n<p><b>Saloman\u2019s work regarding her personal life, according to Bohm-Duchen\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>One work of Saloman\u2019s prior to Auschwitz, showcased by Bohm-Duchen, depicts the tragic death of Saloman\u2019s mother through her art.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bohm-Duchen, there are many artworks in <i>Life? or Theater? <\/i>by Saloman that depict her mother\u2019s death, but her work \u201cIn Heaven Everything is Much More Beautiful Than Here on Earth\u201d is \u201cthe most poignant\u201d of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a very remarkably inventive kind of image, Francesca, her (Saloman\u2019s) mother apparently promises the young girl that she will write to her from up above from Heaven,\u201d Bohm-Duchen said.<\/p>\n<p>Two more of Saloman\u2019s early works showcased by Bohm-Duchen illustrate Saloman\u2019s personal life, portraying sentiments of failure from her initial rejection, and then acceptance into, the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14479\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/11\/Now-I-got-it.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14479\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14479\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/11\/Now-I-got-it.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/11\/Now-I-got-it.png 512w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/11\/Now-I-got-it-300x282.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo caption for right image: \u201cAh now I\u2019ve got it!\u201d Photo courtesy of photo courtesy of Bohm-Duchen&#8217;s lecture&#8217;s source: Charlotte Saloman.Life or Theater? -Jewish Cultural Quarter (jck.nl).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The work portraying Saloman\u2019s initial rejection is titled \u201cOh I am trying, but in vain! My lovely dream is down the drain! Not for me-Academy,\u201d and the work capturing her admission is titled \u201cAh now I\u2019ve got it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bohm-Duchen referenced how Saloman evokes emotion through her artwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook how, in a sense, dark and downward-dragging it is in its evocation of her failure,\u201d Bohm-Duchen said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Saloman\u2019s life during the Third Reich in Nazi Germany, according to Bohm-Duchen<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In her lecture, Bohm-Duchen also detailed Saloman\u2019s work depicting the era of Nazi Germany. According to Bohm-Duchen, Saloman\u2019s depictions of the Third Reich represent \u201cthe beginning of the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of these works is titled \u201cThe swastika- a symbol of bright hope- the day for freedom and bread now dawns- Just at this time, many Jews- who, with all their often undesirable efficacy, are perhaps a pushy and insistent race, happened to be occupying government and other senior positions. -Jewish Cultural Quarter (jck.nl).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to Bohm-Duchen, Saloman reverses the Swastica in her art, which is \u201ca small gesture of defiance against the Nazis in a sense that she could subvert the power of this toxic symbol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two other works showcased in this lecture, \u201cGrab what you can!\u201d and \u201cVengence on the Jews and destruction to their temples\u201d paint a picture of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/holocaust\/kristallnacht\">Kristallnacht<\/a>, an event where 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese images represent a \u201cstark, dramatic\u201d and \u201cterrible\u201d period of German life for Saloman.,\u201d said Bohm-Duchen.<\/p>\n<p>Although Charlotte Saloman\u2019s life was cut short, people like Bohm-Duchen allow her work to live on today and inform others of Saloman\u2019s personal life, as well as the horrors of Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer life was brutally cut off by her murder in Auschwitz in 1943, but there was of course a life before Auschwitz and in terms of what she produced as a creative artist she has lived on way beyond her death,\u201d Bohm-Duchen said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>(Main Photo: &#8220;Vengence on the Jews and destruction to their temples\u201d Photo courtesy of Bohm-Duchen&#8217;s lecture&#8217;s source: Charlotte Saloman.Life or Theater?
