{"id":14491,"date":"2022-11-08T15:21:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T23:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/wilkinson\/2022\/11\/08\/inspired-by-mentors-and-indigenous-heritage-she-helps-students-find-their-way\/"},"modified":"2022-11-08T15:21:00","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T23:21:00","slug":"inspired-by-mentors-and-indigenous-heritage-she-helps-students-find-their-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/2022\/11\/08\/inspired-by-mentors-and-indigenous-heritage-she-helps-students-find-their-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspired by Mentors and Indigenous Heritage, She Helps Students Find Their Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Edna (Best) Yokum \u201909 introduces herself to strangers, she uses both English and the Indigenous language of her Osage heritage as she embraces the name a tribal elder gave her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am <i>Son-se gra<\/i> Footprints in the Woods,\u201d she says, \u201cfrom the Grayhorse District of the Osage Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she was a child, her footprints could be found far off any beaten paths as she explored forests and mesas during trips to Northern Arizona. Sometimes she struggled to find her way back to the trail and to her family. It wasn\u2019t the last time she would feel lost.<\/p>\n<p>Early in her college experience at Chapman University, Yokum wasn\u2019t sure she fit in and didn\u2019t know what she wanted to do with her life. She fights back tears as she remembers the turning point in her journey a decade ago. Chapman mentor professors Paul Apodaca and Ron Steiner helped her find her way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey saved a person who needed guidance,\u201d Yokum recalls. \u201cThe impact they had on me and what I wanted to do with my life was transformational. Now I want to be that person for the students I serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a
