The conference provides a space for community and academic interactions through panel discussions and wellness workshops, emphasizing the work-life balance that motherhood often neglects, and issues of women\u2019s and caregivers\u2019 labor and health, and gender<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/01\/dewhyte.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14612\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14612\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/01\/dewhyte.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/01\/dewhyte.png 340w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/01\/dewhyte-199x300.png 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a> identities. The conference includes Orange County health advocates, mind and body well-being practitioners, local community leaders, and California artists exploring the ideologies of the feminine.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Janice DeWhyte, Associate Professor of Religion at Loma Linda University, author of <i>Wom(b)an: A Cultural-Narrative Reading of the Hebrew Bible Barrenness Narratives<\/i>, will open the conference with a keynote address on the Hebrew Bible barrenness narratives. The keynote address is co-sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/religious-studies\/lecture-series\/index.aspx#gsc.tab=0\">Francis Memorial Lecture Fund in Religious Studies<\/a>. The conference will close with a screening and panel discussion of the Korean documentary <i>Coming to You<\/i> (2021) (pictured in header), with filmmaker Byun Gyuri and the two mothers featured in the film. <i>Coming to You <\/i>follows two mothers, Nabi and Vivian, as they journey with their queer and trans children\u2019s identity, eventually becoming active members of &#8220;Pinks: Solidarity for Sexually Minor Cultures &amp; Human Rights,&#8221; the Korean activist group for parents of sexual minority children.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the conference, academic panels and student presentations focused on Politics of Motherhood, Motherhood and Gender, Motherhood and Race,<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14613\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/01\/motherhood-conference1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14613\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14613 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/01\/motherhood-conference1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/01\/motherhood-conference1.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/01\/motherhood-conference1-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Janice DeWhyte<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Femininity and Motherhood, Intersectionality and Motherhood, and Motherhood and Health will be disseminated to a wide population to ensure a diversity of voices. <a href=\"https:\/\/chapmanu.co1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_dgr3nJ8bYuqTWzs\">Abstract submissions<\/a> are invited to explore how the concept of motherhood is constructed and shaped and how it can be contested and negotiated through art, discourse, and social institutions. Abstracts will be reviewed on a rolling basis until February 28, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, high school and college students are invited to <a href=\"https:\/\/chapmanu.co1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_a2GfDJrjVrhfnQW\">submit poster presentations<\/a> on themes of mothering and motherhood. Posters exploring how motherhood is constructed and shaped through media representations in popular culture, literature, film, art, and social institutions are particularly encouraged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/jan-osborn\">Dr. Jan Osborn<\/a> (English) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/nam-lee\">Dr. Nam Lee<\/a> (Dodge) secured a 2022-23 Co-teaching Competition Award to create a new spring course, Representations of Motherhood in Contemporary Literature and Film, that prepares students to present their research at the conference. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the concept of Motherhood, exploring how the conventional myth of motherhood is constructed and shaped through media representations in contemporary literature and film.
