{"id":14763,"date":"2023-04-07T12:15:24","date_gmt":"2023-04-07T19:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/wilkinson\/2023\/04\/07\/faculty-books-rim-to-river\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T22:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T22:50:09","slug":"faculty-books-rim-to-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/2023\/04\/07\/faculty-books-rim-to-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Books: Rim to River &#8211; A book by Tom Zoellner"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_14764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14764\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/04\/IMG_0523.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14764\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/04\/IMG_0523-e1680894695817.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">English professor Tom Zoellner while on his journey writing his latest publication, Rim to River.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wilkinson College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/tom-zoellner\">English professor Tom Zoellner<\/a> (whose Island on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/2020\/05\/22\/documenting-the-world\/\"><i>Fire: The Revolt that Ended Slavery in the British Empire<\/i><\/a> won the 2020 National Book Critics Circle Award for the best nonfiction book) recently published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rim-River-Looking-Heart-Arizona\/dp\/0816540020\"><i>Rim to River<\/i>: <i>Looking into the Heart of Arizona<\/i> <\/a>\u2013 a story about his 46-day journey hiking through the redrock country in fall 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Arizona Trail is a 790-mile continuous walking path across the state from Utah to Sonora. Zoellner slept outside almost every night and drank from natural springs, rivers and cattle troughs. He lost nearly 30 pounds, \u201cand grew a full beard doing this,\u201d he said. He used his trek as a jumping off point for researching and writing stories about the history and culture of his home state, Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe journey is only about 30 percent of the narrative, which is used as a device that links seventeen essays in the book trying to get to the core of Arizona,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14767\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14767\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/04\/IMG_0052.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14767 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/04\/IMG_0052-e1680894850258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14767\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">English professor Tom Zoellner hiking in Arizona.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Zoellner covers copper mining, political culture, water, wildfires, border crossing, Latino voting, food, music, the history of violence, Native spirituality, retirement communities, and so much more.<\/p>\n<p>Zoellner grew up in Arizona, was educated there, worked at the state\u2019s largest newspaper, and has lived in five of its cities. His family has lived there since before it was admitted to the Union in 1912. He thought he knew everything there was to know about the desert state, but that wasn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found that Arizona is worse than I thought it was, but also so much better than I dreamed.
