{"id":15124,"date":"2023-10-10T10:35:33","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T17:35:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/wilkinson\/2023\/10\/10\/bridges-to-life\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T22:16:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T22:16:19","slug":"bridges-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/2023\/10\/10\/bridges-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridges to Life &#8211; The Ferrucci Institute for Italian Experience and Research: Windows to Italy Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/research-centers\/ferrucci-institute\/index.aspx\"> Ferrucci Institute for Italian Experience and Research<\/a> hosted its first talk in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/research-centers\/ferrucci-institute\/windows-to-italy\/index.aspx\"> <i>Windows to Italy<\/i><\/a> series with a lecture by Dr. Thomas Harrison, a professor of Italian Studies at UCLA, whose lecture explored how the concept of bridges is a staple in Italian history.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Introducing the series&#8217;s concept, Institute Director Dr. Federico Pacchioni (World Languages and Cultures) said: &#8220;We are all familiar with the symbol of the window, omnipresent on the Chapman campus, known by the Latin word fenestra. Fenestra now turns into the Italian fenestra as we come together to intellectually glimpse new Italian vistas and, simultaneously, ideas that can help us return to humanistic and interdisciplinary teaching and learning with a fresh pair of eyes.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Harrison explained how Italy itself acts as a cultural bridge in a geographical sense, as it connects European countries together fostering prosperity. Through his use of personal examples, factual evidence and even movie excerpts, Dr. Harrison portrayed ongoing\u00a0 the impact that Italian culture has on society today.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15125\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15125\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/10\/IMG_0380.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15125 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/10\/IMG_0380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15125\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo by: Ava Brandt)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The lecture \u201cfacilitated conversation about different cultures and the development of Italy as it is today\u201d, explains Camille Burkey, a first-year student attending the lecture for her Italian Studies class.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Windows to Italy<\/i> series, organized in partnership with the Leatherby Libraries, consists of four annual talks alternating renowned scholars from outside Chapman and Ferrucci Institute Fellows who are interfacing with Italy from their disciplinary angles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt [the lecture\/series] is important for the community, students and facility because it exposes them to different perspectives and ways of thinking that open our minds to the possibility of understanding,\u201d said Dr. Kevin Ross, Dean of Leatherby Libraries.<\/p>\n<p>Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences\u2019 Ferrucci Institute cultivates opportunities for cultural programming and curricular innovation that sheds light on the richness of Italian culture.<\/p>\n<p>Future lectures include: <i>The Global Italian Diaspora: Texts and Contexts<\/i> on October 18 with Dr. Norma Bouchard, Chapman University Provost and Ferrucci Institute Fellow; <i>What do Stories do?
