{"id":15142,"date":"2023-10-24T15:22:56","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T22:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/wilkinson\/2023\/10\/24\/a-year-that-mattered-1940-41\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T22:14:36","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T22:14:36","slug":"a-year-that-mattered-1940-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/2023\/10\/24\/a-year-that-mattered-1940-41\/","title":{"rendered":"A Year That Mattered:  1940 &#8211; 41 &#8211; The Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_15144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15144\" style=\"width: 132px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/10\/daniel1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15144\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15144\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/10\/daniel1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel Greene<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research\/institutes-and-centers\/holocaust-education\/index.aspx\">The Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education<\/a> recently invited historian Daniel Greene and documentary filmmaker Pierre Sauvage to speak on \u201cA Year That Mattered: Varian Fry and the Refugee Crisis, 1940 &#8211; 41.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greene, who works at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Sauvage, a French-American documentary filmmaker who is a child survivor of the Holocaust, discussed how the United States\u2019 responded to the plight of Jewish refugees attempting to flee the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>At the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Greene is motivated to tell new stories that challenge traditional narratives. One such narrative, for example, is that some Americans\u2019 had a \u201ccomplete unawareness\u201d of the events leading up to Holocaust. Pointing to widely-read newspapers and magazines across the United States, such as <i>The Santa Ana Register<\/i>, <i>Anaheim Bulletin<\/i>, <i>The Dallas Reporter<\/i>, and<i> the Los Angeles Examiner<\/i>, Greene highlighted several articles with front page headlines relating to Nazism, Hitler, and the persecution of Jews.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>In November 1938, 94% of responders said they disapproved of Nazi treatment of the Jews, but in a follow-up poll 72% disapproved of allowing more Jewish exiles into the United States. \u201c[Even today] Americans have a very hard time crossing the bridge between disapproval and action,\u201d stated Greene.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>U.S. immigration laws were rooted in racism, antisemitism, and the pseudoscience of eugenics with the intent to keep Jews and \u201cundesirables&#8221; out, both speakers noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to discuss everything [the United States] did, and everything [the United States] did not do,\u201d states Sauvage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15145\" style=\"width: 128px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/10\/pierre1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15145\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15145\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/10\/pierre1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"174\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pierre Sauvage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sauvage emphasized it was the efforts of Americans like Varian Fry (<em>pictured in header<\/em>) that made up for the United States\u2019 lack of immediate action. At the age of 32, Fry, an American journalist, went to France in October 1941 with visas in his pocket. His goal was to save as many Jews as he could, and his efforts resulted in saving 2,000 Jewish people from Nazi persecution. In 1942, Fry returned to the United States and continued speaking out against the U.S. inaction, which included calls for fact-finding tribunals and having the Catholic church excommunicate anyone who participated in the persecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRescuers don&#8217;t just ask, they risk,\u201d said Sauvage.<\/p>\n<p>Current student and attendee Stuart Ledbetter (\u201825 History), couldn\u2019t have agreed more.\u00a0 Something that surprised him was how \u201cthe U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Breckenridge Long, was openly anti-semetic and actively impeded Jewish efforts to obtain U.S. visas.
